Welcome all to ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐˜†โ€™๐˜€ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, a series of weekly reviews by Charles Connolly - an artist in his own right. Here, Charles delves into the greatest brand new singles brought to you by the best unsigned artists on our electrifying and eclectic set of

Charles journeys down into the abyss. As ya do.

Enough of lighter times and better days. Let us curl up into a tight quaking ball, and roll into the deep.

Past the goading gargoyles, and face to face with snakes,

The journey is forever long, and yet forever wakes.

A corner reached, a corner turned, another lies ahead,

This never-ending story has an end, but it is dead.

I try, I battle, I clamber with my limbs,

Alas, the limbs are torn from sockets, giving way to sin.

A bright white light - the tunnelโ€™s end?

Perhaps be a light that a train might lendโ€ฆ

A cat and a bat and a witchโ€™s broom,

Worse things than these in darkness loom.

Try for a second to close your eyes, and think about the past,

Your memory is wiped away, you canโ€™t recall the last.

The present is no gift you want, and neither did you ask,

But all thatโ€™s left is endless winding, all this toil and all this grinding,

Seek, and there will be no finding: such a thankless task.

The colours though, I thought to say,

Turn blood to blue, in a funny way.

And all the while, the dogs are biting,

Wild and vicious canine fighting:

Not what I would call inviting,

What have I done wrong?

Zombie heaven, human hell, weโ€™ve only just begun,

No fatted calf, no carefree laugh, just smoke from the barrel of a gun.

Iโ€™m feeling weak, my mind is blown, my body pushes on,

I start to rise, I realise: Iโ€™m riding on a swan!

My arms and legs come back to papa, the cauldron isnโ€™t pleased,

It boils and bubbles beneath me, with a stench of life diseased.

A scorched and ancient rope of twine is teasing from above,

I leap to let the bird away, I leap as though in love.

I grab the rope, I swing the thing, avoiding all the bones,

Oh boy, how I could have been, Indiana Jones.

Well! That was silly. The point is, I listened to Mercury Teardropโ€™s epic 9-minute opus, Abyss, and I just had to review it. But there was seemingly no way to do so without just pointlessly and laboriously taking you through each section of it. And the thing is, it is so good that the sections intertwine effortlessly: I couldnโ€™t even describe it if I tried. It is incredible. Brad Bauman does it all himself, and has a thrillingly PROPER voice. A born singer. I didnโ€™t want to go on about his influences in Gary Numan and Depeche Mode, because every other reviewer in the world will have pointed this out. So I listened again, and put myself in the abyss. Or rather, this is where it put me, and I wrote whatever came. The silly happy ending though, is my own invention (like the rest of it is realityโ€ฆ?). This song is all the coolest darkness, ONLY. It has the air of being a classic too - in a weird way. A real classic for the afterlife. Epic production, sublime singing, jaw-dropping playing, flawless mixing, constant astonishment. And despite its length, never once does my mind start to wander (with the exception of the content of this โ€œreviewโ€, of course). One thing that astounds me about this piece is its subtlety in layering. When itโ€™s banging heads, itโ€™s full-on power, but when itโ€™s soft, there are so many little things going on. Itโ€™s a wonder of a piece of art. I really think Brad should try to get this to the producers of Bond and Bourne. Itโ€™s HEAVY! Not for the faint-heartedโ€ฆ

Apologies to Brad Bauman for a different kind of review. His talents cannot be read. Only heard.

If you donโ€™t like the song, damn you to Hell.

Funny how you ended your review, as I was thinking it was perhaps the most descriptive thus far! Fittingly a very clever take on a truly exceptional track. Kudos all around!

Thanks! Yeah, it was a funny one to write. Just thought it would be a bit of fun. Never written any poetry before, but here it is. Stunning song. If "song" can be used for such a thing.
