Charles errs on the side of cฬถaฬถuฬถtฬถiฬถoฬถnฬถ daring for 101โ€ฆ

Books. Remember them? Ya know: paper and that. Woyds anโ€™ ting. Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ve at least SEEN them. Garish on the outside, hollow on the inside. That is, until you start reading. Then that loud cover becomes sterile and plastic as the words come together to form a brave new world of yours. I am not however going to talk about Aldous Huxley, but someone of a similar ilk. I am going to speak about the most chilling and horrifyingly astounding book I have ever read. And I guarantee you have heard of it. It goes by the name of Nineteen Eighty-Four. The year I was born, but written many moons before said year, in 1949 (the year my mother was born). I am a squeamish person when it comes to film, but rarely with the written word. This book was one HUGE exception. I wonโ€™t go into the theme, as you already know it (damned well SHOULD know it anyway). However, there is a scene that takes place in the Ministry of Love (oh, the irony). Following my 100th review, what better time to mention Room 101 – some of you might be quite familiar with its meaning these days. It is a torture chamber for those who have โ€œdone wrongโ€. Or at least what is considered wrong by the โ€œPartyโ€โ€ฆ A place of your personal worst nightmares. Think Nazism meets extreme communism meets sadism – not a nice place, basically. They decide what is right and what is wrong, and should you choose to disagree or go against any of that, you will pay severely. In reality, it would surely be your duty to escape from a prison camp, no? You would see it as the only option, but THEY would see it as โ€œagainst the rulesโ€, and so must be punished should you even attempt such a thing.

This was George Orwellโ€™s image of how the world could be in 1984. Thankfully, he was wrong – for the most part. But nearly forty years on, there are many signs of the book in modern society, like the idea of Big Brother watching your every moveโ€ฆ Lord knows what they REALLY know about us. A chilling thought, no? We are also more connected these days and subconsciously told what to think and even HOW to think. They steer us towards certain things and away from others, but all without us really realising. Why, ten or twenty years ago we probably would have laughed at what we think these days. This is called manipulation – sometimes subtle, sometimes very much not. Occasionally we can see through it, but usually we are completely unaware. Feeling uncomfortable yetโ€ฆ?

So. The right and the wrong. Should we, shouldnโ€™t we? Hard to say! The darker side can be alluring, but is it actually that dark? Is there anything wrong with what we have done or are considering doing? We donโ€™t get to choose. Society and the โ€œPartyโ€ chooses. It all comes down to interpretation and feeling. If the feeling is strong enough, maybe you should just do it. Nike. But what ifโ€ฆ Ah, to hell with What if! Letโ€™s press play.

Much like these words above, a songโ€™s mood can be ambiguous. Saying one thing and hinting another. In Rich Allenโ€™s latest single, Lily Flower, he oozes wrongdoing with spats on! The centre crease of each trouser leg is completed with a turn-up (cuff) for weight, as he sways at the knee to the slow beat. Shoulders high, the fedora tilted so only one tight cheekbone catches the light. His equally well-dressed band members surround him like his own adoring mafia. Slinky is the name of the game. His floosies know how to use their feather boas, just like they know how to flutter their fake eyelashes. Rich is urging us to go against the system – itโ€™s certainly tempting. Seemingly limitless alcohol flows through the streets of prohibition. Itโ€™s not just slinky, but raunchy and sexy! The horns politely and elegantly play tennis with the guitar and owgan. But it is only when the spotlight falls on the floosies in the chorus that you really feel overcome with the sense of having sold your soul, yet knowing it was worth it. Sheer ecstasy! This is REAL! I donโ€™t feel like a stifled sheep any longer. My heart is radiant and cleansed. Reborn, even! But then, thereโ€™s the lyrics. Dem woyds.

One thing I love about lyrics is interpretation. Sometimes itโ€™s obvious what a song is about. โ€œAll You Need Is Loveโ€, for example, is obviously a song about three gay hippos. But sometimes itโ€™s rather more vague and could have several meanings. I feel like Lily Flower could be one of those ambiguous ones. It could be about love. Or an attempt at love. Or even a resurrection of love. It could be about a fling. It could be about God. It could be about an affair. I personally opt for a fusion of all or most of these. The music itself can play a part in oneโ€™s lyrical analysis. For example, in this case the music is sexy and dark. In my mind it conjures the devil rather than Jesus. Which is altogether much more fun and interesting. But does this fit the love-filled words? Oddly, yes, it does. Something about the heat of a nightโ€™s passion, the devil leering over you with the wink of a dirty uncle. Whether this is the start of a beautiful lifelong romance, is irrelevant. It is about the here and now. Is there someone else involved with either of them? Are they, shall we say, otherwise connected? Is this feeling of the Gods an immoral one? Or is it as innocent as a couple of 20 year olds having fun? This is evidently not a love to last forever, but a brief distilled moment of perfection. A time when the future should not be dwelled upon or even pondered over. Much like how music should take over oneโ€™s soul, not be simply on in the background to mask dull thoughts. So when both music and lyrics of this calibre are smooshed together like this, I am thudded by an involuntary shudder of euphoria – my very own brief distilled moment of perfection, be it right or wrong. Because at this moment, who cares about morals? When God is offering a disc of bread but the Devil lays on a mighty golden feast, which are we to chooseโ€ฆ? Morals go to the wind, and that feast is ours.

It is only afterwards that you start to wonder if you maybe shouldnโ€™t have done what you just did. The guilt kicks in. The overthinkingโ€ฆ But the deed is done. It is too late. Yes, yes, you can do the โ€œremorseโ€ thing, lying to yourself like an over-the-top Shakespearean actor. You can try to tell yourself it was bad and immoral of you, and you can make sure it never happens again, but you will always live with that secretly wonderful feeling of doing what you shouldnโ€™t have been doing. โ€œYou know what children are likeโ€ – Yup! Little bleeders up to no good. And so what? They enjoyed their cheeky childhood. The time has passed. No one was harmed. Live a little!!

Sometimes itโ€™s worth going to Hell for those moments of irrepressible lust. I am not however suggesting you go on a stupendous crime spree, and start murdering those who repeatedly irritate you. But for those truly special times you cherish forever, it is maybe worth the consequence. We have all done bad things throughout the years, but do you really regret them all? Nope. Tell me honestly. My answer is no. I do not regret them all. And I certainly donโ€™t regret co-producing and mixing Richโ€™s masterpiece, Lily Flower. But then again, this song AIN’T one of those bad thangs, no sir!

Luckily in this modern western society, you will not be subject to any form of torture should you do something wrong – unless of course, your ex gets a hold of you, or God forbid, your wife or husbandโ€ฆ! In which case, armour should take the place of amour.

I totally get that “love blues” or “love scandal” vibe from the song too. I picture like a swanky 1920s era bar while I’m drinking a double and wondering where I went wrong with “her.” LOL. Or the stereotypical private eye starting out the story narration with, “…and then she walked into my office”

As much as I love 1984 and unfortunately see the many parallels with todayโ€˜s censorship and lack of privacy, I must say the โ€œAll You Need is Loveโ€ joke was my favorite line from this week! Beautifully written as always, and another ridiculously good song by the amazing Mr. Allen!

Excellent review as always and love the track. Hmm, govern-ment: To rule the mind… words are very useful tools indeed and we barely pay attention to the origin of these root words, prefixes and suffixes. Agreed 1984 is chillingly accurate of right now, but Huxley’s “soma” was pretty spot on too. Out of the darkness always comes the light. ๐Ÿ™โ˜ฎโค๐ŸŒŸ

Sometimes it’s good thing to let your imagination hang in those dark places. It’s at the nadir of our existence that we actually can see the apex. Those smoky dark green rooms, high hair women, and the cigarette man temping you to sample forbidden vices. Enlightenment has a price. Thanks for the review and for the amazing job co-producing mixing and ,mastering. You make me look good!

Unknown member Sep 10, 2022 Until about 2012’ish i thought ‘Sexcrime-Nineteen Eighty Four’ was just another brilliant Eurythmics hit. When i finally saw the movie i was rather surprised , something like the “Three gay Hippo’s” (Fab name for an LGBTQAEIOU band BTW) might have been, pretty affraid at what i was seeing. i watched ‘Passion of the Christ’ the same night so was in one helluvva state and needed emergency medication, which turned out to be 3 tot’s of a rather potent 10 year old Brandy.Had me pretty much under the table, doesn’t take much i’m affraid, alcohol befuddles both my brains pretty darn quickly.’Angels and Demons’ was supposed to be the third of my trilogy, would probably now be called a tripodcast, movie evening but i didn’t make it that far.Made it as far as my bed and had awful nightmares that involved all sorts of weird thingy’s that i best not share unless i God and Devil forbid, end up in a Nazzi camp in the unpredictable future… So. let’s get to Lily Flower shall we? Well, the title is very deceiving but the art told me it was not your average Lily @Rich Allen but then so was 1984 .In yours Rich, i expected some sort of lullaby , pretty flower’s and farm animals, not gay hippo’s BTW, maybe a few sheep ,perhaps a cock crowing , a hen laying eggs , monkey’s, and lotsa sun flowers , daffodils, bluebell’s and of course, lily’s dancing in the breeze as the song title suggests. Gosh, look at the time, guess i should cut to the chase and give a comment on this REVIEW that is less than a 6 minute read. Fab review CC, as funny, weird and entertaining as they alway’s are , enjoyed it very much and laughed a LOT. Great song @Rich Allen . Love the jazzy tones , definitely conjure’s up images of the 20’s, the 1920’s that is.Bluesy, smokey dark rooms, sexy lady’s clutching those long cigarette holders and Lord know’s what else they’re clutching but i’m pretty sure it’s not handbag’s or purses. Been listening to all 3 of your tracks on Spotify lots of times and all are different but somehow i can hear the CC ellement in this one.You have an amazing voice and i love the way you use it, changes all the way through Lily Flower .You are great at voice control and emphasise exactly the right words to bring your message across. Dark, light, soft, hard you have all th right sound’s in all the right places.Definite hit in my eye’s but hopefully not a smack from Charles for yabbering so long!. UBER GรœTE Track. Luv it! ๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ’™ This answer to the REVIEW was for entertainment purposes only so as CC say’s , be good and i say, oh behave. PS. i take no responsibility for my spelling. One uf us can’t spell, not sure is it’s spell correction or me’s. Show Less Like Reply Charles Connolly Sep 10, 2022 Replying to Unknown member Well! What more can I add to this…? Well! What more can I add to this…? Probably the most beautiful GIF I have ever seen, by the way. Rich got everything just right with this song. He is a late-blooming master. I don’t envy those dreams you had, Leo. Be careful with a quick succession of those kinds of films, just before bed. I have actually not seen either, but am told they are excellent. I am a fan of John Hurt… p.s. It was never the spelling I noticed so much as your obsession with the apostrophe ๐Ÿ˜‰
