Charles reviews Paul McCโ€ฆ

I’ve been thinking about niceness recently. Niceness, politeness and good will. Kindness and honesty. Selflessness. I’m quite nice, but I’m no saint. I will quite naturally be good, but I won’t be a pushover. I will put up a fight if I believe in something strongly enough. But then again, sometimes I will lose that battle either because I’m not strong enough, or because I don’t have the energy, or, because my opponent is simply stronger; or stronger willed. And this is how I came to thinking about niceness. Are nice people too nice? Are they too good for their own good? Can being too nice be unhealthy or even detrimental?

At the New Artist Spotlight, I have โ€œmetโ€ SO many incredibly nice people. The good. The saints. The ones who live in everlasting guilt if they so much as eat the last slice of chocolate cake. The thing is, these nice people would never DREAM of eating the last slice of chocolate cake. Theyโ€™re far too kind to do something so brazen and selfish as that. Instead, all these nice people will huddle together and watch that delicious slice of chocolate cake – that they all want to devour – go to waste. They will stare as it turns green and furry, and they emphatically tell themselves they made the right choice. Did they, though? Did they make the right choice? I would say they did not. But imagine their disgust if after the pointlessly inevitable smalltalk of โ€œNo no, please, YOU have it – No no, please, I insistโ€, some big pig comes along and steals that final slice from over their heads and devours it wholeโ€ฆ Did the pig do the wrong thing? Well, thereโ€™s always tact, but I think not. I think itโ€™s better that SOMEone had it than no one. But then again, maybe notโ€ฆ The question is whether that was the most deserving person in the room. What REALLY should have happened was this. A knife comes into play, and that final slice is divided up among them. Quickly, though, before biggy piggy arrives. But is that fair to biggy piggyโ€ฆ? Oh, the trials these nice people have to go through. It must be so hard being that nice.

What with my job being music production and sound engineering, I very often receive messages with a similar theme. Before I divulge that theme, I think itโ€™s important to tell you that I donโ€™t mind this at all. In fact, I am honoured that they even think to choose me as the recipient. The theme of said messages is, my thoughts on their latest masterpiece before it is released or even finished. It is such a relief when I press play and it is absolutely wonderful and utterly flawless. But – I must be honest – this is seldom the case. I mean, itโ€™s seldom the case even with mainstream music. Usually I have various thoughts. I ask them specifically what kind of feedback theyโ€™re after; whether itโ€™s songwriting, production, recording, singing, playing, mixing, or โ€œwhether it would hit big because this might be the oneโ€. Inevitably, they usually reply โ€œwell, anything reallyโ€, which of course gives me nothing, and I doubt they mean this. From their wording and manner, I gauge the situation and feel for how honest and frank they want me to be. Bear in mind, this is all in black text on a white background. I canโ€™t hear their voice. I canโ€™t look at their facial expressions. I canโ€™t tell instantly if theyโ€™re excited, confident and bold, or if theyโ€™re nervous and, well, nervous! But because my life has been conducted in messages for many years, I have got pretty good at reading people by their way of typing. Maybe they just want confirmation that itโ€™s the best thing I have ever heard in my life – although they already knew that. But then, why would they even ask me if they already knew that? Is that not just an admission of self-doubt? Maybe theyโ€™re PRETTY sure itโ€™s good, but they just want to make sure they havenโ€™t lost their mind. The sensible choice of a second pair of ears. Usually, though, I have SO much to say about what I have heard, and Iโ€™m just not sure if theyโ€™re ready for that. Or even if they WANT that. Tact is my number one priority here, but also honesty. The difficulty is fusing the two. Very often theyโ€™re wondering if perhaps the mastering needs a tiny tweakโ€ฆ Yet Iโ€™m wondering if the drummer was drunk and why the lead singer was struggling to find a note among the cat squeals. Whereโ€™s the middle ground? Do I fob them off with the classic โ€œIโ€™m too busy right now, but Iโ€™ll listen when I canโ€ – hoping that I leave it so long that they forget all about meโ€ฆ? I hate doing that. In fact, I canโ€™t remember if Iโ€™ve ever actually gone through with that. Initially it might be my plan, but guilt and niceness get the better of me, and I end up doing what I can in terms of verbal help. Sometimes they leave me a little tip (very kind indeed), and sometimes they donโ€™t. Sometimes I mind, and sometimes I donโ€™t. It depends if they have taken up hours of my time, or just ten minutesโ€ฆ

Rather welcomingly, they sometimes give up and ask me to sort all the problems as paid work. And sometimes, that was their plan all along. Which is fine with me! But what if they donโ€™t want my hands-on help, and instead just want my verbal feedback? The thing is, how do I say what I want to say? And SHOULD I say what I want to say? I want to be honest. After all, THEY came to ME! But still, I am aware that it is very common for artists to lack self-esteem. Equally, they can have far too much of itโ€ฆ They might just want some sort of verification that itโ€™s good to go. Or maybe some minor tweak. But I am absolutely sure that not one single artist wants to hear that the whole piece needs to be ripped apart and basically done again from the ground up; especially when they spent 5 hours getting that hi-hat right (it was far from right). The worst though, is when it IS finished. It has already been uploaded to their distributor. What can I say? They canโ€™t change it. So anything I say is pointless. And yet, they want feedback. In this case, tact usually takes precedence over honesty, sadly. But itโ€™s their own fault for asking me when itโ€™s too late to be changed. Overall, though, I am constantly asking myself how to say the right things.

Or should I say โ€œthing-gsโ€โ€ฆ We are tripping over to Liverpool this week. I donโ€™t need to tell you which country thatโ€™s in, because: The Beatles. No matter what any Liverpudlian might claim, the only real reason anyone outside Britain has heard of Liverpool, is The Beatles. We all know this. I went there about a decade ago. And why? The Beatles. I stayed in the Hard Days Night Hotel! And no, I didnโ€™t miss out the apostrophe, the hotel did (rather irritatingly – probably an annoying copyright reason). My entire trip was Beatles. Oh, and Tate Liverpool for a Mondrian exhibition. Tate Liverpool used to be called the Liverpool Tate. Just like โ€˜Transport for Londonโ€™ used to be called London Transport. And now itโ€™s called TfL. Yuk. Itโ€™s called progress. I digress. Back to Liddypoo, as I call it. Look, itโ€™s better than my personal word for Polandโ€ฆ So! Liddypoo. What a glorious trip it was! The only thing I regret is not having visited Paul McCartneyโ€™s childhood home. Itโ€™s a museum, you see. A perfect replica of how it was when he was living there, complete with much original furniture, and even some original wallpaper! I think it would have really done something to me, walking through those very rooms. Anyway, I didnโ€™t. It’s funny how, being a Londoner, I pronounce Singer as Singer, yet I pronounce Stronger as Strong-ger. I don’t say Sing-ger. Liverpudlians keep it nice and simple. They always pronounce that second G. I don’t say Class and Dance; I say Claas and Daance. Paul McCartney released an LP many moons ago called โ€˜Working Classicalโ€™. This pun doesn’t work in a London accent, because I don’t say Class. I say Claas. But I don’t say Claasical. Well, truth be told, I actually often do. But that’s because I’m weird. I have always called that album โ€˜Working Claasicalโ€™. Call it an amuse-bouche.

What might come as a surprise to you all is that despite Paul McCโ€™s fame and fortune, he has joined the NAS! I know. Quite crazy, right?? In fact, heโ€™s been a member for quite some time. Nearly two years, as it happens. Truly. I am not lying. Paul McC from Liddypoo is a member of the New Artist Spotlight!!! Okay, the thing is, I might not be being quite fair here. I mean A Paul McC from Liverpool is a member of the NAS. Paul McCormick, to be precise. I have often called him โ€œPaul McCโ€ฆโ€ in messages. Itโ€™s our own little amusement. It had occurred to me that this might actually annoy him, but he was perhaps too polite to let me know. Like he didnโ€™t know how to say the right things. But the thing is, the more popular Paul McC is not a hated character. Quite the opposite these days. Heโ€™s like the ultimate living person in music. So being called โ€œPaul McCโ€ฆโ€ can hardly be an insult. AND, they have something in common. Theyโ€™re both Liverpoolish. Sorry: Liverpudlian. Absurd term, but there you go. I TOLD you we were tripping over to Liddypoo.

From now on, when I say Paul, I mean McCormick. Paul is one of the nicest people I have ever โ€œmetโ€. I have to say โ€œmetโ€ because in recent years most of the people I have met, I havenโ€™t actually MET met. Only โ€œmetโ€. Such is the way of the internet. But yeah, Paul is one of the nicest. And itโ€™s just so clear from the moment you interact with him. Just a few words and a glimpse of his face on any of his artwork, and you just KNOW heโ€™s a do-gooder (in the literal sense). Or more precisely: a mean-weller. He means well. I think heโ€™s the type to feel dirty should even the slightest dark thought cross his mind. He is without a doubt honest to the core. And if he canโ€™t be kind and honest in the same breath, he will force himself to find a way out. Paul is pure in this sense. Pretty rare these days, I must say. But of course, this kind of niceness and honesty can prove difficult in the real world. What if he is confronted for an opinion, and he knows that the confronter is not going to like his opinionโ€ฆ? Well thatโ€™s what his new song is all about! Please welcome Paul McCormick with his latest single, โ€˜How To Say The Right Thingsโ€™! Despite me being an evident fan of Paul, I had never reviewed his music. This was not because I didnโ€™t like it. I always liked his music. I think itโ€™s more to do with mood. Paul makes pop. Like poppedy-pop-pop-pop kinda pop. Catchy-is-as-catchy-does kinda pop. The kinda pop that usually kinda passes me by these days. But every so often it grabs me. Mainly by way of sticking in my head. Did I mention it being catchy? Yes, yes I did. Paulโ€™s latest music definitely does NOT pass me by. His previous single was fabulous (โ€˜Acknowledge Meโ€™), and I was kicking myself for not having reviewed it. Of course, I could always have done a belated review, but whereโ€™s the fun in that? Everyone already knows (and loves) the song. Besides, I knew heโ€™d have a new one out soon. And hereโ€™s that new one! Itโ€™s more pop than the last (which took a brief detour). Letโ€™s talk titlesโ€ฆ

Sir Paul. No, not that sort of title. And he prefers being called Paul, because THIS Paul has not yet been knighted. Iโ€™m talking about song titles. Reading a list of his song titles reveals rather a lot more about him than most songs do for other artists. Me, for example: โ€˜Hands Up, Hands Downโ€™? โ€˜Parakeetโ€™? โ€œCome The Endโ€™?? Am I dying?! Not yet Iโ€™m not. It isn’t that easy to work me out from titles aloneโ€ฆ But Paulโ€ฆ? Letโ€™s have a look at some of themโ€ฆ โ€˜Iโ€™ve Had Enoughโ€™, โ€˜Better Aloneโ€™, โ€˜Into Obscurityโ€™, โ€˜Anxiety and Iโ€™, โ€˜Privacyโ€™, โ€˜What Did I Do?โ€™, โ€˜Imperfectionsโ€™, โ€˜Acknowledge Meโ€™, and now his latest: โ€˜How To Say The Right Thingsโ€™โ€ฆ This all paints a rather clear picture of a bold, brave man ready to take on the world. The epitome of machismo! Actually, I might have got that a little wrong. Trump, he is not. Whether you love or hate Trump, I think we can all agree that he does not have a soft, beautiful soul. SWIFTLY moving on from THAT prickly topic!!!! Paul very much DOES have a soft, beautiful soul. A soul that is kind, sensitive and unsure. I like him. Heโ€™s a very likeable character! And I imagine that his songs help him a lot in terms of mental anxiety and โ€œworking it all outโ€. I think he is a lot like a lot of us in many ways. But there is one way he is far braver than most of us. He opens up. He is honest with us all. He is comfortable enough to tell the world about what he sees as his shortcomings, in what I personally see as his charm and his very own character. Not everyone wants an arrogant rockstar.

So! I suppose youโ€™ll be wanting to know a little about the song, no? This is fast-paced upbeat pop with no regrets. Itโ€™s shameless and proud. In fact, thatโ€™s the funny thing about Paul. Despite all those titles, so many of his songs are incredibly upbeat and happy. He smiles his troubles away! And hey, whatever gets you through it. Paulโ€™s voice sings loud and proud atop the music, clean and clear. There ainโ€™t no mumbling or ambiguity in the lyrics or vocal delivery. Itโ€™s upfront like a picture-book manual. Itโ€™s not trying to be anything other than what it is. A great pop song with a simple meaning that is dear to his own heart. Something has happened with Paul this year. His latest two singles have – frankly – been leagues ahead of his previous releases. He was always good, but I just KNEW he was going to get even better. What I didnโ€™t realise was how quickly that was going to happen. And itโ€™s all in the writing. I think it used to be more about the lyrics for him, with a nice musical backing track to make it into a fully-fledged song. Lyrics and melodies: thatโ€™s how I always saw him. But in the last two releases, the writing of the music has got more involved. More interesting. There are subtle chord changes that just work, and theyโ€™re not obvious. I also think he does things the right way. I think most music artists are simply artists. They might be able to sing, but their thing is writing. Paul evidently realised his strengths, but also acknowledged his weaknesses – not easy to do. Which is why he has been working with Robert Whiteley for years. Robert is the chap behind the production and mixing. Which is why (also for years) Paulโ€™s sound has always been supoyb. He didnโ€™t haul that slow barrow up the hill, eventually meeting his producer/engineer on album number four. He took the fast train direct to Robert on day one in 2021. Thatโ€™s what Rich Allen did with me: he decided to go solo, and asked me to produce and mix all his music from single number one. It just sort of makes sense (he says, blowing his own trumpet). Of course, IF you can GENUINELY do it ALL to a very high standard, then DO. But unless youโ€™re Kaminski or Patrik Ahlm (or Tame Impalaโ€™s Kevin Parker), youโ€™re probably lying to yourself.

I mentioned Paulโ€™s subtle writing talent in terms of chord changesโ€ฆ Itโ€™s only subtle because it works so well and so naturally. You wonโ€™t hear anything sort of โ€œwoahโ€. Itโ€™s just not that kind of music. But these subtleties keep things interesting. Heโ€™s turning into a real pro, and if mainstream pop wasnโ€™t so bloody gloomy these days I can see him writing for the BIG boys (and girls). In the meantime, enjoy the bright chiming guitars, the tightest drums, a load of harmonies, a choir(!), and of course, that distinctively excited voice full of enthusiasm and pep. Thatโ€™s Paul! The mixed production is flawless. Thatโ€™s Robert!

A final thing for Paul. Iโ€™m really impressed with your sharp upturn in writing, and your persistent insistence on quality. I admire that a lot. I also admire your courage in letting us know all about you in song. Boy, you gots guts. Through all my years of writing these articles, Iโ€™m learning how to say the right things.

No cheeky ending-gโ€ฆ? Oh, be nice; or biggy piggy will kick the Liddypoo out of you.

How To Say The Right Things hooked me right away with its bright guitars and unapologetic pop energy. I love how his lyrics open a window into his own doubts, yet the music beams with confidence and joy. Itโ€™s honest, catchy, and shows how much heโ€™s grown as a songwriter.

The guitars sound great on this track. They ring and chime perfectly. The lyrics, melodies, hooks and structure give me Maxรฏmo Park vibes! Which I love! The choir is a beautiful, powerful touch! And there are some really nice, subtle production touches throughout. Overall the song drives along with bangin’ energy! A top-notch track Paul, congratulations! And yes Charles, we all must truly ponder the vastness of niceness…sigh

Paul is a very talented lyricist and songwriter. This is a fun sounding, head bopping along kind of tune! Canโ€™t wait to listen to this in the car on the way to work. Listening to it right now and my 4 year old is dancing so u have her ๐Ÿ‘ on it being a fun dance song ๐Ÿ˜‚ Keep that niceness going Mr. CC ๐Ÿ˜‰ Youโ€™re a solid dude in my books already though! ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿป

Congrats, Paul, on your first CC review and on another great track – you write fantastic lyrics and combine them with the catchiest of catchy pop. And I always love your energy. If the first 2 tracks are anything to go by, the album’s going to be a wee belter [as we say in Portugal, with a Scottish drawl]. Thanks Charles for another entertaining, insightful and thought-provoking article.

I enjoyed the review particular given that I am a big Beatles fan and lived in Liverpool for 6 years, albeit quite some time ago, so it has probably changed a fair bit since then. I did however, get to visit the Tate before I left. I understand the difficulties in pitching feedback in the best way, particularly if the request is vague or it is unclear how sensitive the artist might be, and there might be some really important learning points at stake so to not flag these up could be a missed opportunity. I guess it’s about constructive feedback and balance, as there is probably going to be some elements worthy of positive feedback to sandwich the “roomโ€ฆ Show More

Nice review, Charles. You started so sweet. I was expecting it to take a dark turn, but no, you kept it all sweetness and light, which does go very well with Paul McC’s music. A very upbeat track, even though the title is a question. Personally, if I ask for someone’s opinion on my music, I always want an honest answer, about how much they love it ๐Ÿ˜. I do find it difficult when people ask me for my opinion of their music, as I am not able to give a false opinion about music, so I sometimes find myself saying things like, “Nice cover art.”๐Ÿฅด. Excellent production on this week’s track, and I love where the choir comes in. I wasโ€ฆ Show More

Very well written. I love the little segues into words and pronunciation. It’s like you just write whatever thought stumbles by, and give us an insight into who you are and how your thoughts work. Paul sounds like he could be a good friend. I love how his work goes over personal relatable topics. I defionately agree a well written song can sound ok even if perfomed badly, however a badly written song is usually bad even if prerformed perfectly. Sounds Like hes doing Healcore as well. I applaud those that make music to help people relate to their problems, esp the ones people just dont talk about, as those are usually the ones causing us the most distress. Kudos!โ€ฆ Show More

Catchy, it is! Instrumentation is superb, especially those chimy guitars. The “lead” guitar is extra chimy and comes in at all the right places. Sometimes it’s not just what you play, but what you don’t play. Paul does that magnificently. The writing has taken an upswing recently. All of this together makes for great recordings. Great job, Paul, and great review, Charles.

Great to see Paul featured in the corner! He has a really solid discography and I would not have been surprised to have seen his name here in conjunction with any of his previous releases. Well deserved first entry. First, I really like the tempo of this song, it makes it stand out straight away! Paul really puts his heart on the sleeve with every song in an admirable way. And I know he’s working on his third album, so I can’t help but to already look forward to his coming tracks as well.

This is such an honour Charles, thank you for reviewing my song this week! As you rightly observed from my song titles, songwriting is an incredibly cathartic tool for me to make sense of what goes on in my head and the world around me, and it’s helped me gain a lot more confidence and self-acceptance. I’m also very pleased to hear that you consider my latest 2 singles to be my best work so far too! I’m still working on album 3 and so far I’ve got 4 songs done out of 10, so feedback like this is incredibly encouraging for me as I keep chipping away at it! Charles, dear, you nail the balance between polish and vulnerability in Paulโ€™s new track. As artists, I think we all know the itch to get feedback and are painfully familiar with the struggle between hard feedback (difficult to take) and soft (feeling good in the moment but doing nothing to make us grow). Paulโ€™s songs sound happier than they really are โ€“ maybe except for the recent collaboration with Eleanor Collides who inserted a darker element. Greetings to Liverpool, a gritty city, from Berlin, another gritty city. We think gritty is where most of the best music is birthed (sorry, London๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ). Now that was probably not the right thing to say…

Pop music and indeed music as a whole is a reflection of the society we live in, as our lives come into contact with ever more layers of government restrictions and oppression, it is bound to shape the music we make. Paul’s upbeat voice and bright uplifting melodies and lyrics are what set him apart, like a ray of hope in the longest of nights. Sorry, getting a little reflective, awesome song, great review really enjoyed!!! ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿฅ€๐Ÿ’€

Sense of rhythmโ€ฆ something most musicians โ€“ but few people nowadays โ€“ actually have. I believe thatโ€™s exactly why an indie community like NAS can work so well: because everyone respects each otherโ€™s creations. Something thatโ€™s no longer taken for granted โ€˜out thereโ€™. Thanks to Paul McC for a great song, and thanks to CC for the review!

In a world begging for perfect answers (or for the answers we want to hear), Paul McC (this one, not the other) dares to ask whatโ€™s right rather than whatโ€™s easy. And Charles struggles with this question, too. Paulโ€™s tracks are pure pop. But artful pop, with emotional undercurrents expressed in the lyrics and in the song titles of his back catalog. Thanks, Charles, for pointing that out โ€“ I hadnโ€™t seen this in this light before, but you are spot on!

Many years ago I took a trip to London. Top of my list of places to visit was Abbey Road. I needed to get that iconic photo of me crossing on that famous sidewalk. You get there and try to figure it out… how did they manage to get that photo at that angle. The road splits before the crosswalk, where did the photographer stand. Plus the traffic is crazy and none of the cars were going to allow anyone to take that shot. The locals must be so tired of fans blocking their daily commute. Anyway, sort of got the shot, a little wonky with a few cars obscuring the view. Tick that off the bucket list. So manyโ€ฆ Show More

Ha! That’s fabulous. Do you know, I’ve never done that, despite living here. I’ve crossed it many times, but never had a photo taken. There’s one thing about the crossing though… Quite a few people get the wrong one… There’s another crossing further up the street. I once went to an Abbey Road Studio garden party. There was a BBQ and I had about 6 burgers. That is quite literally all I remember about it…

Charles has a wonderful way of defining comparisons in such a cogent and thought-provoking manner – that it makes us think we’ve known it all along. Every song I’ve heard from Paul McC has helped me form a mental image of his “niceness” – it couldn’t be any more obvious actually. Yet so much of this review was like a light going off, illuminating the need for more positivity in Art – like no other time before. On a related & unrelated note, I’m an enormous Beatles fan – yet somehow (and embarrassingly) I didn’t recognize the Paul McC connection particularly in the similarity of vibe – let alone name.

Delighted you chose this one. Paul already knows how much I rate this stonking track so I won’t repeat myself, but I must take issue with “I think heโ€™s the type to feel dirty should even the slightest dark thought cross his mind.”. I once saw him in Tesco in Allerton nab a bar of Dairy Milk Caramel. However, he subsequently gave it to a homeless orphan sat by where the trollies are parked, so I decided not to dob him in.

It is a strange thing to have the strongest feeling for knowing someone and having met them and befriending them without ever actually meeting face to face. The Internet is such an amazing, wild and often horrible thing. Love this article, as with all of them. Have not listened to Paul’s new song yet, but will be here shortly! I apologize. Unfortunately, I can’t honestly appreciate pop. I also associate it with the regime that we once had and only selected pop songs (and brass bands) were approved. But it’s hard for me to find my way to it musically as well. But I think, it is a lot to make a beautifull pop song.

Excellent Song, definitely catchy, well done Paul. Funnily enough, I went to Liverpool a long time ago and did a load of the Beatles things. The one thing that stands out in my mind was when driving along the street in the Magical Mystery tour bus, one of the locals saw us coming and channelded the Waterboys dropped his kacks and gave the entire bus a glimpse of the whole of the moon!๐Ÿคฃ

I often wonder whether the 21st Century has thrown rock largely to the side because of how unsafe it is, and how the status quo has shifted to the lofi idea of chill and tranquility over edge. Or whether its just music sales companies preferring to deal with single artists which they can manipulate easier than groups.

Oh I respect the prospective and appreciate your take. I say,โ€ I never learn anything from โ€œItโ€™s Great!โ€โ€ So I do respect your take. Iโ€™m more of a, โ€œIโ€™ll split the last piece with you if youโ€™d like?โ€ kind of guy. As far as music advice, when people ask me about what I think of their song I commonly use the sandwich technique. Itโ€™s also kind of easy to only stick to the positives but for me I think others deserve more respect than that because I would want that. So instead of offering criticism I try to offer insight when possible. I can tell we would probably get along pretty well man. Your reviews are solid and I appreciate the accolades.
