𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 – this week: Fate Once Found Me / Four Falls – Nicholas Karl McNally

Welcome all to 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿, a series of weekly reviews by Charles Connolly – an artist in his own right. Here, Charles delves into the greatest brand new singles brought to you by the best unsigned artists on our electrifying and eclectic set of 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 playlists.

𝙁𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙊𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙈𝙚 / 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨 – 𝙉𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙨 𝙆𝙖𝙧𝙡 𝙈𝙘𝙉𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮

Charles is taking sides…

To make up for last week’s “lazy” article, I will be doubling up this week… What is a single? I mean these days. It used to be a shiny black groovy platter with a great song on one side, and a very mediocre one on the other. This disc was 7 inches in diameter. I will skip over cassette tapes. Then came the CD. The CD single usually had two or three (or occasionally seven) songs on one side (usually one being decent), and no songs on the other. The disc was 4.75 inches in diameter. I will skip over downloads. Now we have streaming. It is ubiquitous. A modern single for streaming services has no sides, and no diameter. It usually has one song. Usually not that great. There is something so sterile about releases these days, especially when it comes to single singles. No backside, no B-side, and nothing to hold. There isn’t even a barcode to ruin what would have been a perfectly good design. But speaking of design, its cover measures roughly 2 inches on an average sized phone screen. Do you think the cover of Sgt. Pepper would have been devised had it been designed for a canvas of 2 inches…?

I don’t know about you, but I prefer the old way. You rush to your nearest record store in order to pick out the latest single by your new favourite artist, and you clutch it in your hands on the way home (walking faster than usual), knowing full well that not only are you now the proud owner of that wondrous song you heard just once on the radio the previous day, but that you have another song to look forward to. The “flip-side”. It probably wasn’t going to be that great, but it was always a bonus. It felt like a little extra treat. Occasionally – in a weird way that you can’t quite put your finger on – it was better than the A-side! Let’s look at The Beatles again; because it’s always fun. We all know and love their 1965 hit, ‘Help!’, right? But what was the B-side? Did you even know there was a B-side? Is this whole thing of B-sides a revelation to you? You yunksters don’t know nuffin’. And you missed out, too! That B-side was ‘I’m Down’. Possibly one of Paul’s rawest vocal dazzlers in the entirety of The Beatles’ back catalogue! So that B-side was on the album, right? Nope. They never were. It was another incentive to get the single rather than wait for the album. Besides, usually (‘Help!’ being an exception) even the A-sides weren’t on the album. Everything was special and unique!

So that was 1965. ‘Revolver’ flipped the music world upside down in August 1966, and then they disappeared for a “whopping” six months!! I know, it seems ridiculous now, that six months was thought of as an absolute age… Welcome to 1967: the year of our lord. Or: the year our lord grew a moustache and dabbled in substances while dressed in purple bootcuts. Was it to be a new album…? Not YET! February brought us a single; but a single with a difference. A single that no doubt frustrated the hell out of radio stations. It gave them a choice… That’s right, folks. We didn’t have an A-side and a B-side, we had an A-side and an A-side. A double A-side, as it became known. This guaranteed TWO fabulous songs for the price of one! It was to be the very best of John, and the very best of Paul. George sulked, and Ringo just kept on smiling. ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ on one side, and ‘Penny Lane’ on the other. This was exactly 200% perfection, and a surefire way of getting to number one – as if they ever need worry about such a thing. The thing is, they failed. This couplet of sonic joys was to top out at a pitiful number TWO!! Well, number one must surely have been something VERY special indeed!……….. Ahem……. A middle-aged man of 30 by the name of Engelbert Humperdinck had recorded a song that yearned to be released. ‘Release Me’ stormed in at number one, and sat there for six weeks, leaving no chance for The Beatles to regain their throne. I later found out that the reason this double A-side didn’t get to number one was because the sales were split between the two songs. It actually sold more than the Humperdinck intrusion. No fair!! So, is ‘Release Me’ actually any good? Well, while it remains far more famous than his song, ‘Lesbian Seagull’ – I’m not making this up – his 1967 album is titled “Twelve Great Songs plus ‘Release Me’”. An inspired title, but I think that says it all. It ain’t great. It’s pretty bloody awful, if we’re being honest. The B-side (‘Take My Heart’) was perhaps marginally better, but the bar was pretty low. Poor Beatles. George continued to sulk, Ringo continued to smile, Paul saw it as an incentive to do better next time, and John threw a chair through a window. All of this may or may not be exact fact. True fact!

So!! On the topic of double A-sides, I have something special for you. This is an artist I have “had on the show” just once before. And speaking of catchy artist names (here’s looking at you, Mr. Humperdinck), please welcome Canadia’s Nicholas Karl McNally to the stage! ‘Fate Once Found Me / Four Falls’ is the finest acoustic folk in all its double A-sidedness. For many months I have been re-watching the classic TV series, The Wonder Years. Despite running from 1988 to 1993, it was actually set in the late 60s and early 70s. It plonks me back in a simpler suburban America. I say “back”, but I wasn’t alive then, and I’ve never been to America… But somehow it feels familiar. It feels warm and cosy. It feels, safe. And now I’m sounding like the protagonist’s own narration. But why do I mention this? Because as soon as I pressed play, I felt like I was immersed in the soundtrack. You see, one of the great things about the show is the music throughout. It could be Steppenwolf’s ‘Born To Be Wild’ (possibly my favourite rock song of all time), but it also could be Joni Mitchell’s ‘I Think I Understand’, for a more pensive quality. It is this very quality that I hear in ‘Fate Once Found Me’. It is like a softer song written by the soul of NAS artist Bryan Cooper, but with the voice of NAS artist Dany Horovitz (once the hyped gig’s adrenaline has left his system). The soft plucks of the acoustic, with the gentlest, sincerest voice. A voice that starts lonely on line 1, but is joined by himself on line 2. It’s like he’s telling himself it’ll be okay. This could be double-tracked vocals, or this could be a “varispeed” chorus effect; whichever way, it adds another dimension. It’s also the moment that a second guitar joins in with a piano. Lush! It’s like pairing Paul Simon’s wishful yet wistful sound with Brian Wilson’s sombre, more heart-wrenching writing (more ‘You Still Believe In Me’ than ‘Surfin Safari’…!). You’ll hear Simon & Garfunkel (Gumfarkel, as I like to say) in the chord changes and melodies, not to mention Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s ‘Guinevere’ at 39 seconds. Pure beauty!

‘Four Falls’ continues the theme and precision of guitarist Bert Jansch, but in a more familiar folk style. There is an open drone in open strings as picked cycles commence their hypnosis. That is, until the strings are choked at 15 seconds. Nicholas starts to sing. Nick Drake lives (!), while Joni Mitchell serenades us with a plucked ostinato. The stereo field is as wide as the meadow before our very eyes. I’d like to compare Nicholas to the most famous folk singer of all time – Bob Dylan – but I can’t. Frankly, McNally is musically far superior. And he’s a damned sight better singer than Dylan! But then again, isn’t everyone? I only said this to annoy the die-hard Dylan fans. Tee-hee! Back to the song. If you thought we were only going to get guitar and voice, you are very much mistaken. 44 seconds in, things change. Is that a Mellotron cello or bagpipes…? I think it might very well be both! It’s like one of those rare Led Zeppelin acoustic numbers. Very British. Psychedelic in a Celtic way. Cider-Celtic? There is the constant feeling of lost reminiscence. As if to say, “What was it all for?”. And I don’t mean lyrically, I mean musically. The unison lines are bleak yet courageous. A perfect blend of major and minor, finishing unresolved. The lack of drums or percussion throughout somehow adds to overall impact. I then realised the possible main reason this works. It’s the guitar. It’s – I think – a 12-string. Meaning that every strike hits two strings at a time. Some will be in unison, others will be in octaves. But also, this means that the sound is naturally thickened. It creates texture and something altogether more substantial. McNally also does his own mixing. He thankfully didn’t cut out all that deep low end – something so many artists do these days. The sound is rich and alive!

‘Fate Once Found Me’ perhaps has more in terms of writing, yet ‘Four Falls’ has perhaps more in terms of graspable production.

I will be leaving the playlist up to you, the listeners. In the comments below, I want you to tell me which song you prefer. For the next week, both songs will be on the Connolly’s Corner playlist (Spotify and Apple Music), but a week from today, I will tally up the votes and keep just one. As well as your preferred choice, tell us all why you chose that one. Only one rule: you cannot pick Engelbert Humperdinck, as he is disqualified for spoiling everything. And if you don’t choose either song in your comment, I will assume that you have not read the article. PLEASE, though, don’t just choose the song that most others have chosen – it’s boring and pointless. And don’t choose the opposite of what everyone’s chosen either – annoying clever clogs. There are two sides to everything…

THIS is one worthy double A-side. In the words of Joni Mitchell, play “Both Sides, Now”.

You know when the glasses get muddled? “Whose cider you on?”

Two guitars and then PIANO! Yummy stuff! The melodies are very well done and the technique of playing and production are on point!

I must say I connect more with Fate Once Found Me. The beginning grabs me right away. I love that type of guitar play. And the melodies are gorgeous.

Fate Once Found Me – takes me away the most. It has just enough Beatles/Hendrix energy in chord choices and guitar touches. Lovely dreamy vocals. And there is a melancholy undertow that appeals to these ears. Four Falls – gets the Simon & Garfunkel feel just right. Beautiful 12 string picking and the strings are perfection. And I do love that chorus. A truly brilliant double A-side single. Fate Once Found Me edges out Four Falls for me. But it’s very close. Thank you Charles. And congratulations on both tracks Nicholas. Fine, fine work!

Week after week, I am always waiting for Charles review. Today is no exception. I loved the way Charles brings us back to memory lane, and of course his meaningful and appreciation to details on the production of Nicholas Karl McNally latest song, proof that he really knows his stuff.

Another compelling review by CC this week. I can definitely grasp the comparisons to more well-known artists & can hear the inspiration. It’s difficult to choose a fav…but Four Falls resonates with me a bit more (probably because I use a lot of arpeggiated alternating picking in my own compositions similar to Mr. McNally). Both are lovely pieces – albeit too short!

I loved Charles Connolly’s review of Nicholas Karl McNally’s double A-side! His nostalgic comparison between physical singles and streaming culture was both educational and charming. The detailed musical analysis comparing McNally to folk legends, alongside those specific production observations about the 12-string guitar, shows Charles’s remarkable ear for detail. The interactive voting element at the end is a brilliant way to engage readers! Connolly’s Corner continues to be a champion for unsigned artists, bringing thoughtful analysis typically reserved for mainstream acts.

I enjoyed the walk down memory lane with the review, that golden feeling of buying vinyls and the hidden gems that one might find on the B-Side. With regards the tracks I like them both and the guitar in Four Falls reminds me a bit of Roy Harper, but for me Fate Once Found Me is my favourite due to those silky vocals, the variation in guitar, the arrangement of other instruments, and it has more bottom end than the other track.

I listened to both songs very closely and I liked both. “Four Falls” had some great harmony in it, but “Fate Once Found Me” was my overall favorite. The guitar in that one was so lovely and reminded me of songs that my oldest brother used to play. His voice is so smooooooth. Great songs and review! And Charles, you skipped over 8 tracks without even a mention.

There was a BIG stretch of time where the album would live or die on the single (or vice versa) and you’d be considered either out of your mind, or “big” enough to do it as a statement, for suggesting it, but nowadays artists can just put out whatever they want without it NEEDING to be consumable in another form. I used to go to one with a listening booth, which was so important if you were considering splashing the cash on an album. You simply couldn’t hear all the tracks on the radio (or anywhere else!). Remember buying a CD but only knowing one song…and it turns out, you only like the one song? That’s $15-20 wasted. Now you only have to stream that one song. No more getting bamboozled. You don’t get to own anything and if the artist has an issue with distribution or they just decide to pull all their material from the streaming service that you pay for (Neil Young really doesn’t like Joe Rogan), you don’t get to listen anymore or until the songs eventually come back (you tried, Neil. Joe’s still there). Like Reply 1 Like Show more replies Dreadful Savior May 13, 2025 Nicholas Karl McNally’s double A-side casts a subtle, somber spell. Fate Once Found Me stands out with its eerie acoustics and wistful 60s echo. Four Falls carries a quiet grace, but Fate holds the edge. Fine choice, Charles. Like Reply 1 Like Love Kaminski May 13, 2025 I immediately understand the link to vinyl. The artwork (no HAL, praise the Lord) is reminiscent of a find at a flea market, where after a long search in bins of used vinyl, you pull up this album among the lesser gods, and immediately know: this is going to be good. “Fate Once Found Me” is my favorite. I think it’s the better song, and yes, that’s probably due to the Cooperian qualities in songwriting. But a double A-side is certainly justified. It may be weird, but I also hear an indie folk-like Nothing Compares to U in McNally’s Fate, which again is weird, because I’m comparing it to something anyway. Connolly’s Corner proves once again to be a safe haven for the authentic and true indie musician. Show Less Like Reply Dom Piper 3 Likes Show more replies Chris Franklin May 13, 2025 Nice review, Charles. I miss record covers, especially album covers. I still have around 200 vinyl albums (I sold off all the dross; I used to have about 500). I still enjoy marvelling at some of the artwork and reading all the sleeve notes, where one could find out who played what, who produced, who engineered, etc. Digital is so sterile in comparison. No matter how good the artwork is, it is so hard to see, and sleeve notes are a thing of the past. You are lucky if you can find out (other than the artist’s name), perhaps who produced, and that’s about it. I think this is another way we feel more remote from the artist. We learn almost nothing about them or the inspiration for the song. Now to the vote, (I like the idea of an interactive review). I think “FOUR FALLS” sounds more like an “A” side to me, and I like the orchestration, very nicely done. It is very Crosby, Stills, Nash, etc. I enjoyed “FATE ONCE FOUND ME”, also nicely done, but “FOUR FALLS” gets my vote. Best of luck to Nicholas Karl McNally with your excellent new release ❤️ Show Less Like Reply 1 Like Show more replies Bernice Marsala May 13, 2025 There’s a great sound to both of these, but “Four Falls” grabbed me right away, so that one gets my vote. I think the melodies are more interesting on that one. Four Falls is by no means bad either, but the first mentioned is definitely above, with a more pleasant soundscape overall. It feels lighter and soaring, even though the full low end. I think singles with more than one song are nice, but I think it’s a shame when a brilliant B-side doesn’t end up on the album. I’ve been thinking about releasing singles with b-sides, but it always felt like a wasted opportunity.. throwing away a perfectly good song for nothing for me.. maybe if I had more time and more songs I’d do it. I fell in love with Fate Once Found Me at first listen, and it has only grown on me. Sonically, it is rich and interesting, creating an acoustic musical tapestry beneath the vocals. Lyrically, it has depths I do not find in Four Falls. Both are outstanding songs, but I pick FOFM.

A compelling review as ever about two songs, both of which are great, and I wouldn’t want to say one is better than the other. But since neither Engelbert Humperdink or Bob Dylan are permitted answers, I think I’d say that after a couple of listens, Fate Once Found Me has the edge in how it resonates with me. And in the same way, I think I would opt for Strawberry Fields in your March ’67 review!

There are pros and cons to both music formats.

Nicholas Karl McNally’s double A-side casts a subtle, somber spell. Fate Once Found Me stands out with its eerie acoustics and wistful 60s echo. Four Falls carries a quiet grace, but Fate holds the edge. Fine choice, Charles.

I immediately understand the link to vinyl. Show Less

Nice review, Charles. Best of luck to Nicholas Karl McNally with your excellent new release ❤️ Show Less

A vote! That’s fun. “Fate Once Found Me” it the better one to me.

I’m glad I experienced double-sided singles, even those CD “singles”. It had its charm. However, future generations will perhaps remember the charm of Spotify, which by then might have been a marginal issue for old-timers. Just like my grandmother, she didn’t play records and probably remembered something else, maybe how they sang while working in the fields. Not only the genre of music, but also the way of listening to and experiencing it is a matter of the generation, how they experienced it in their strong moments. I miss the olden days as well, I grew up in the 90s but still. I really just miss having to go to a music store and browse in order to find new, good, music. So cathartic. Nowadays things are way to accessible, even though it is extremely convenient, it takes some of the joy away at the same time. I usually do my actual listening to music from vinyls. It’s just more pleasing, the whole process. All this being said, I still see the importance of singles even today, but have and always will prefer the whole album experience. Like Reply Dom Piper 2 Likes Charles Connolly May 18, 2025 Replying to Bryan Cooper Satisfyingly punchy is exactly what this guitar is. You’re absolutely right about B-sides. It was usually something different. I think the killer for B-sides was actually iTunes downloads. One would have to pay again for the B-side – no one was going to do that. On streaming, people would probably simply not know of the B-side’s existence, but at least they wouldn’t have to pay again. Or even once! As to the Stone Roses, what was released vs what is available, feels like we were lied to in the first place (which we obviously weren’t) – that’s how crazy it is. The good old days. 😂 Like Reply 1 Like Charles Connolly May 18, 2025 Replying to Bryan Cooper I think that’s more the fault of the artists and labels not giving it to them properly. Streaming services are only the window dressers, not the manufacturers. As you were giving lots of musical references in the article today I wanted to add another, for me as soon as I heard his vocals and music sytle John’s Denver’s Country Road came to mind straight away. Loved the wonder years too 👍 Like Reply 1 Like Charles Connolly May 18, 2025 Replying to Andrew Flynn Depth of sound in terms of production, yes. But writing-wise, I find Fate Once Found Me to be superior writing. Thanks for the extra comparison. 😊 Like Reply Terrestrial Animal May 14, 2025 I miss the olden days as well, I grew up in the 90s but still. Going to give Nicholas’ new release a listen now! Thanks, as always, CC! And the melodies are gorgeous. Like Reply 1 Like crashworldband May 13, 2025 Fate Once Found Me – takes me away the most. Edited Like Reply Dom Piper 2 Likes Show more replies Bob Kitt May 13, 2025 Another compelling review by CC this week. Like Reply 1 Like Show more replies Pamara Music May 13, 2025 I loved Charles Connolly’s review of Nicholas Karl McNally’s double A-side! Like Reply 1 Like Terry Gilbey May 13, 2025 I enjoyed the walk down memory lane with the review, that golden feeling of buying vinyls and the hidden gems that one might find on the B-Side. With regards the tracks I like them both and the guitar in Four Falls reminds me a bit of Roy Harper, but for me Fate Once Found Me is my favourite due to those silky vocals, the variation in guitar, the arrangement of other instruments, and it has more bottom end than the other track. Like Reply 1 Like Show more replies Tim Consley May 13, 2025 I listened to both songs very closely and I liked both. Like Reply 1 Like Show more replies Show more comments

Well, I’ve always liked Engelbert Humperdinck. I have fond memories of my dad singing Release Me, with an Italian Accent. Quite funny actually. I used to love buying singles. That second side was always a pleasant surprise, Let It Be/You Know My Name. Sometimes it was an incredible surprise, Hey Jude/Revolution. Nicholas Karl McNally is Canadian, well right on. I must listen ASAP. Thanks for the review Charles.

Can I get a “woot woot” for Canadian artists being featured? Nicholas’s ability to create timeless pieces always astounds me. The perfect blend of melancholy and hopefulness is reflected in every aspect of the song, creating a beautiful ambivalence that chills your spine. It was a really good idea to start this article with the mention of single vinyls and the Beatles, because these songs take you back to simpler days. Though I am a Gen Z child, I respect these songs as my parents were born in the 60s. Amazing work Nicholas and thanks Charles for perfectly summarizing the beauty of these two songs!

I really enjoyed this piece, Charles. Your take on the evolution of singles was spot on, especially the bit about modern singles being so “sterile.” Your breakdown of Nicholas Karl McNally’s “Fate Once Found Me / Four Falls” was great too. Use of the 12 string, very nice. And also yes to the low end being stripped away being something that happens A LOT. I’ve been guilty of it too. We’re generically taught to fear the low end in mixing, but we take it too far now. I’ve been bringing it back with my own mixing with vocals and guitars so it just feels WARM and thick. The way you linked it to “The Wonder Years” vibe was perfect. It… Show More

WoW! A mí también me encantaba esa serie, más por su música y por la ambientación que por la historia. Kevin Arnold era un majadero berrinchudo. Pero la música, aunque extemporánea, marcó una época para muchos. Voto por ‘Four Falls’

Today double duty but it’s a pleasure for me. I note with pleasure dear Charles that you never choose banal artists and songs. The first song “Fate Once Found me” seems to come out of a fairy tale but in common with the other song “Four Falls” they have this brilliant guitar that makes the two works very valuable. Bravo.

I do remember the days of travelling into town especially to go to “Andys Records” to get the song I’d been giddy about all week. Remember making that exact trip especially for “Bartender and the thief” – stereophonic, “masses against the classes ” – manics and “one more time ” Daft punk. Not sure why those in particular stand out

I also preferred the days where you could buy a physical cd, tape or vinyl. Something tangible, it’s almost as if they don’t want us to have manifestations of our creativity and ownership but that’s a story for another time. Absolutely great song definitely going to be voting for that song in the nas top 20 (might even be my Thursday’s pick.

I really like the flow of the song four falls myself. I like how it opens up into an orchestral melody about half way through the song and it really draws you in. Sometimes I feel like artists don’t really know where their songs come from or who influenced them and that’s what makes them even greater!
