Connolly’s Corner

Welcome all to 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿, a series of weekly reviews by Charles Connolly – an artist in his own right. Here, Charles delves into the greatest brand new singles brought to you by the best unsigned artists on our electrifying and eclectic set of 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 playlists.

𝘾𝘼𝙂𝙀 – 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙠𝙤 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙠𝙚𝙨 & 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙣

Charles is content in his cage…

Europe in the Summertime. A song I wrote years ago. Europe is fun in summer. We think of Roman piazzas. We think of English coasts. We think of Spanish villas. Sun, sun, sun, as it relentlessly beats down upon our already scorched arms. Summer is the time to get away. Americans call it vacation. We, in England, call it holiday. A break from the norm. A time to eat ice cream without feeling it has to be squeezed into a swift lunch break. But is it simply a break from the norm, or is it more than that? Is it wanted or is it needed?

Life these days is more stressful than it used to be, let’s face it. The pace is unnecessarily speedy to the point where you’re out of breath. It often feels like there is a threat if you don’t do everything perfectly, and fast. Your email inbox is proof of that… Everyone is rushing. Few are smiling. There is that much more competition. There seems to be constant worry and fear of the near future. The news seems only to dwell on the worst side of life. We feel trapped in a never ending cycle of gloom, that is only to be followed by gloomier gloom. Was this how life was supposed to be? It’s certainly not how Hollywood has always portrayed it… But that’s Hollywood. How about looking at a past reality: grandparents. Were they always stressed, worried and depressed? Chances are, they weren’t. Life was fine for them. Could it be that we just expect too much from life, and that people’s expectations were lower back then? Or could it be that people had everything they wanted? Did they have simpler needs? I think so. But my needs are pretty simple and meagre.

We desperately need freedom. We’re technically free, but we’re not. Modern life demands a great deal from every living soul. We feel stuck and in a jam. Call it a cage, if you wish, but I think the real reason people enjoy and look forward to holidays, is the escape. Escape from normal life. A brief illusion that you’re living the life you wish you had. A time to feel rich. A time to enjoy everything around you without having to think about work or emails. A time to be a king among kings. If you think about it, all tourists are pretending to be kings and queens (or film stars without the fame). You’re free to do as you wish, in a place of beauty. It’s time to break the lock and leave that cage. Freedom awaits!

I am wondering though, if many have fled their cage in search of a better life, but they haven’t yet found it… I’m also wondering if there are some who never had a cage. And I’m further wondering if some are LOOKING for that cage. I know: weird thought. Bear with me. A cage would usually be seen as a prison. But think of it now as a community. A place seemingly locked away from the rest of the world. Isolation of a different kind. A place of safety. A place to belong. A holiday can often turn into a lifelong excursion. One likes it so much that one considers moving there. I think sometimes people go away to FIND what they feel they never quite had. That beautiful little cage that they can call home. Do remember though, a holiday is always a fond memory, not because of the place or the joy that place brought, but because it was a holiday. It lacked all the things that bring you down. No work, no bills, no threats, no negative thoughts. But sometimes moving to that place of dreams can be just what the doctor ordered.

Please welcome our three Europeans in the Summertime: The Blindfold Experience, Wilko Wilkes, and Shayan Regan. Michael Lind (The Blindfold Experience) has his cabin in the woods in Sweden. Paul Wilkes (Wilko Wilkes) has his new house in Bingley, in the North of England (a change from his old house in Bingley, in the North of England). Shayan Regan (Shayan Regan) has breathtakingly beautiful Florence (he doesn’t own all of it). All three of them are most comfortable and content within their chosen cage. This week’s pick is three people doing what they do best. ‘CAGE’ shows the true purpose of a collaboration. Michael is the producer. An excellent producer. He picks and chooses the best people for the song he has in mind. He doesn’t believe in attempting to do it all himself, because he can’t. And he also feels a band with set members wouldn’t work because each song will demand something different. Hence his usual method of letting the song determine what is needed. He has his little black book of musicians for the music itself, but will also play some parts himself. Although the guitars and drums are still to the fore (as ever), ‘CAGE’ was always supposed to have the emphasis on the vocals. He had to choose wisely. ‘CAGE ventures into spoken word as well as singing. Well, okay, not spoken word. The verses are rapped, and the choruses are sung. A little like my song, ‘This is How the Story Begins’ (also with young Wilko). I’ve always liked the coming together of rapped verses and sung choruses. There’s something so immediate that grabs your core in rap (probably because it’s more like speech), but then there’s the flow and the catchy element of having a sung chorus. One of my favourite examples of this technique is ‘My Life’ by 50 Cent, Eminem and Adam Levine. Works perfectly. Probably the most famous example would be ‘Stan’ by Eminem and Dido.

Michael opted for whom I consider to be one of the very best rappers on the independent music scene, Wilko Wilkes. There is something so utterly unique about his delivery. It has urgency and force, but never manages to quite hold back his playful, silly side. It’s somehow just so honest. So very human. There’s no pretence and no acting. Having said that, he plays the part well. The thing is, the chorus needed something more than singing. It needed more than melody and hummability. It needed confident youth in sound. It needed to soar. And frankly, who soars better than the one and only Shayan Regan?? I’ll tell you. No one. Both Wilko and Shayan are full of bite. It’s like they entered the studio wearing a boxing glove clutching a can of Coke. Sugared up and ready for a fight, they belt their finest. But always taking turns, because beneath the macho exterior lies two sensitive gentlemen. Michael’s only macho exterior is his beard. The rest is all gentleman. Despite all this belting and oomph, the verses of ‘CAGE’ are hella slow. But slow has depth, swagger and space. Slow often means the opposite of boring. Slow also means there is somewhere to go: progression.

Progression is the name of the game with this song. We start sparse and somewhat barren, as though we have begun with a desolate end. Crispy, languid beats bring things to life, as the lead guitar starts to open its eyes. It turns out those eyes belong to Wilko. Rhythmically, he explains the situation. The story. The past. The journey has begun. Despite some positive memories, there is a sense of impending doom… The lead guitar lurches forward with a “chunk-chunk” harmonic, like the swing of a dragon’s neck, as its fiery eyes suggest it’s dinner time…! This is what they call Verse 1, Part 2. This terrifying creature disappears from view momentarily, but home is a long way away. Sweat drips as you attempt to escape the feeling of dread. The worry builds, the fear stacks. The guitars and drums escalate, throwing your heart into overdrive. All goes black as a glass teardrop of fire falls from the sky. You screech your heels to a standstill, expecting total annihilation. The teardrop shatters on the ground and all is in flames. The tempo doubles, and you RUN! Shayan soars like an eagle! The soul takes over. Magnificently thrilling! The fiery builds, the declines back to darkness, the dynamics and exhausting emotion! Then two verses and choruses later, there’s one heck of a guitar solo in here. It ain’t all about the vocals. In the final half of the final chorus, the drums are just crazy with what sounds like a TRIPLE kick drum pedal, only reserved for those rare drummers with three feet. Look, good things come in threes.

This release really shows off the brilliance of human collaboration. Pure excitement.

The song feels like a slap in the face of all the A.I. robots making music. Cage Against the Machine.

The power & dynamics of this song are top-notch. And the production and mix are incredible. Drums sound out of this world. Just huge! Sweet solo as well. It all comes together beautifully. Top marks all round to this team! Thanks Charles.

Lovely review of an outstanding collaboration between three of the finest artists – and people – we’ve ever had in this community. Michael, Wilko and Shayan all hit it out of the park with this one. From the music to the rapping to the singing, everything fits together perfectly. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention another legend – Andres Guazzelli. This might be the best mix I’ve ever heard from him, and that’s no small feat in itself. To have it all topped off with this review, which so perfectly captures the uneasy times we’re living in, is just icing on the cake. I’m so proud of you all and beyond blessed to count each of you as friends!

Another amazing text from Charles, and yes I’m really looking forward to the summer vacation, being caught in the office cage for too long, have not even had time to create music. But Michael have had some time to do fantastic music during the last couple of months, earlier with Shayan, then Liz and now with both Shayan Regan and Wilko Wilkes. Cage is an epic masterpiece and a fantastic collab, and I hope that Michael will continue to do great music with fellow NASians. Hope that you all will have a great summer vacation!

Oh Charles… dearest Charles. You poetic blacksmith of the airwaves—how you forge words with the same smoldering fervor with which we churn our synths and scream into fogged microphones at midnight mass (held in a disused abattoir, naturally). Reading your musings on “CAGE” was like sipping absinthe with Baudelaire while dangling from a chandelier—equal parts dizzying and divine. This triad of Wilko Wilkes, Shayan Regan, and The Blindfold Experience—what an ensemble! A rapper, a poet, and a sonic dream-weaver walk into a studio, and instead of a punchline, they give us existential discontent and a kick in the gut. We love to hear it. Or rather, to feel it vibrate through the bones of our eyeliner-rimmed skulls. You spoke of… Show More

Great review exploring the escape from the constant pressures of modern life, and of this track by three very talented artists. I particularly like the dark feel to the verses and the rap works really well there. Also that lead guitar in the first verse really “talks”

CC’s very last sentence summed it all up “Cage against the Machine”. These ridiculous 100% A.I. generated songs(?) could never (at this juncture, anyway) duplicate this level of human creativity. I’m actually astonished and frustrated that more waves (.wavs 😜) aren’t being made regarding this travesty (and I don’t mean A.I. powered plugins or using ChatGPT for rhyming ideas – I’m talking about the poseurs who type a single sentence into Suno or Udio & voila! brand new epic song that they proceed to claim they wrote & performed. It’s an insult to creativity. The song “Cage” is indicative of 3 talented people combining the frequencies of their Artistic souls into an amalgam of sonic melody that can’t be artificia… Show More

BANGER! HEADBANGER! I was a huge fan of this kind of music in my youth, and i still appreciate a good one when in hear some. It is a great working team! I already complimented Wilko on tiktok for his flow eminem style, the stop of the distortions on the drum break on the hook is so well arranged! This project deserves a album of its own! 🤟

Before I even played this one the first time I knew it was going to be so good with these 3 collaborating with each other. Mike, Shayan and Wilko! CAGE is fantastic, and I love we can hear the 3 styles blended into one song. Very catchy and that there is still the timing or space for all 3 of u to shine is amazing! Well done guys 👏 A great choice Mr. CC! Makes me realize NAS artists need to collab more. So…….. anyone interested? 😆

Honestly, to your earlier point, I wonder if it was just harder to share those anxieties? At least as an American with grandparents from the Great Depression, I have to assume they had their own issues, it just wasn’t as accepted to talk about them (nor did they have so many outlets for doing so – which is great for me, because I LOVE complaining! 😂)

Is it still called a “Blindfold Experience” if it opens your eyes this wide? 😵‍💫 This track isn’t just a collab—it’s a genre-hopping, expectation-slaying sonic threeway (in the classiest way, of course). Wilko Wilkes drops bars with enough clarity to make your therapist nervous, Shayan croons with soul-soaked sincerity, and The Blindfold Experience turns emotional turmoil into a smooth, moody groove (in the beginning, at least). Also, props to Charles for his inimitable way to give us existential dread and music analysis in one go. “Is it ever possible to really know a person?” Probably not. But if their playlist has “CAGE” on it, they’re at least working on themselves. 👀🔥

Oh, to escape from one’s cage. However, I find that no matter where I go, I’m still there, so the journey seems somewhat pointless. Perhaps the most relevant cage we need to break free from is the one in our head. Interesting track this week, and fine performances from all involved, and the production is most excellent. Really enjoyed this take on summer holidays and the idea that sometimes we’re just looking for a little escape or even a new ‘cage’ to feel safe. The way the song brings together different styles and voices shows how collaboration can really bring out something special. It’s a good reminder that sometimes, taking a break isn’t just about fun, it’s about reconnecting with what really matters. Awesome review, awesome talent!

Started to listen to The Cage a few days ago ….. I got no further than the rap …. As a folky who almost by default dislikes rap, perhaps I should have listened further on that first attempt …. .For that error at least, I deserve not having had a holiday/vacation/break since forever ….preferring my own cage which I call freedom …… Then I read your review….and as ever it kept me riveted … SOOOOO I went back and listened to the whole track throwing my prejudices re rap to the wind and enjoyed the song immensely ! So glad I did!!🎶🎶 Thank you again for your insights and brilliant writing which I look forward to each week.

Charles, you mentioned that some people are actually looking for their cage. Reminds me of my Cairn Terrier, Cooper. Whenever he gets truly frightened, which isn’t too often, he runs for the safety of his cage (crate). There he feels safe. It is his calm space. As for the song, they really did a great job of it. I most liked the guitars and the chorus. Shayan has a very nice voice. This is one of the few times I have heard it. I will have to check out the rest of his catalog. Nice song and nice review, Charles! (P.S. I will get your name correct this time!).

Also, talking about life and it being a cage and people wanting to escape from it … Totally agree. I think life has always been hard, and busy and whatnot. It’s just, nowadays, with the Internet and everything being readily available and lightning fast speeds, it has escalated. It’s like even when I was a child, it was still completely normal to be outside with zero parental supervision, we didn’t have phones. I chuckled at the Wilko-Bingley house comment. Took me a good 10 seconds to recover from that. What a fantastic read luv. The cage follows us all, haunts us all. It’s up to us to decide to break free from it, to get swollen by it, or to bend the rules and the bars a little bit for that freedom. Not an easy choice to make in the current world. I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in this project. It was a dream collaboration between three of my favourite people on NAS (oh, don’t worry luv, you’re very much at the top too) and I was given leeway from Michael to experiment on a few things with new stuff and it paid off. I don’t know if I’m qualified to say this might be the best mix I’ve done, but it’s almost my favourite result. Very pleased how this one turned out. Wilko is a savage, savage man. Shayan just… keeps soaring. And Mike is a very, very bad man in a very, very good way. You know what I mean 🙂 Cheers to you, CC, for your incredible dissecting talents and being an overall wonderful chap, even if you DON’T GIB ISLANDS BACK. Show Less

CAGE isn’t just a song, it’s an experience, and the way Wilko, Shayan, and Michael bring their talents together is nothing short of electrifying. It’s undoubtedly a song that grabs you from the beginning with that slightly melancholic touch. Then it continues like hip-hop worthy of the genre, and suddenly the choruses arrive with that deep distortion that makes the song grow and takes you to the heights. It’s an excellent piece of work.

Life really does feel like a cage these last 6 month. But summer is here so lets open the cage for a bit. When I heard that these 3 artists were working together I went, Wow, can’t wait to hear that. Three of my favourites. When I heard Cage I was, Yes, that’s what I was hoping for. A great track. Congratulations to you all for coming up with a killer combination of artists and an amazing track.

I had already listened to this song because Spotify recommended it to me as a new release 1 or 2 weeks ago. It has a nice musicality and very beautiful choruses

”Semester” it’s called in Sweden! And when you’re having it! You supposed to chill. Never works for me 🤣 but I still love it. This song takes me back too when there was a context in the lyrics and the instrument was actually played 🙏 Love it ❤️

I really like this mix between rap and singing. These are songs where mastering is the most important thing and it was done well. Very nice guitars and great voice. Chorus that immediately enters your head. Well done

Great review of a fantastic track which somehow distils the diverse sound of each artist, comes out with something unique, but still has the hallmark of each. Think if the last 6 months of the world were your holiday, you would be wanting a refund.

We only need to travel to Africa, Asia, or South America and we can notice how comfortable and safe our European cage is. And how lonely our cages in Europe are. Their comfort and safety do not force us to really go out among people every day. However, we humans as a species are accustomed to danger, and therefore there are starting to be popular voices that promise to protect our comfort from marginal danger from the outside and to lock us into a sense of safety from the world. Beautiful music with a sense of urgency, abandonment, alienation. The same urgency and loneliness as in The Wall.

I absolutely loved this song and all of its dynamics. It certainly does bring together a lot of different components from the vocalization to the instrumentation. It’s so diverse throughout that it truly does tell a story! Another great song pick this week, Charles! Thank you for bringing this one to our attention with your in depth analytics and sharing your thoughts!

I like shorter songs. It makes you play it again.
