𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 – this week: by my name – Emily Jones

Connolly’s Corner

Welcome all to 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿, a series of weekly reviews by Charles Connolly – an artist in his own right. Here, Charles delves into the greatest brand new singles brought to you by the best unsigned artists on our electrifying and eclectic set of 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 playlists.

𝙗𝙮 𝙢𝙮 𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙚 – 𝙀𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙮 𝙅𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨

Charles looks forward…

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have heavily edited this article before publication.

Well, here we are. Another year. Funny, ain’t it. We do this every year. And yet every year we do this mental mishmash of bleak optimism. The good thing is, for just ages, the sun has been shining in London. Bloody freezing, but it looks lovely. How was your Christmas? And your New Year? Don’t bother answering – it’s irrelevant now. Yes, yes, I’m sure it was lovely. Mine was too. But that period is over and done. Back to the grindstone. As bleary as we look; as numb as we feel, we must not get lazy and fall into the trap of “I’ll do it soon. I’ll do it later”. (I’m actually very pleased most of you had a lovely, cosy Christmas and a refreshingly low-key New Year, and I don’t want to seem like a Scrooge, but the time for Scrooge has elegantly come to an end – like a calligraphy quill leaves the parchment)

Let’s get straight into my first Cornered artist of the year. The sheer amount of research I have to do in order to find some actual information on some artists kind of astounds me. Are you people TRYING to be incognito? Don’t you WANT to be popular and successful…? This week I spent a good half hour trying to find the artist on TwiX and Instagram. Got there eventually. But I needed more than that. I needed to know where they were from. And I needed to know that they were REAL!!! I say “they” for two reasons. One, “they” encompasses any gender (a standard English language thing, long before the pronoun war), and two, because there is a certain plural to this singular artist. And no, I’m not talking about any multiple personality disorder. Please welcome Emily Jones! To say her Spotify bio is succinct would be an understatement: “I love music. I hope you love mine” – yep, that’s it. That’s all I get. Which leaves me with little. There weren’t even any social links either. Not one. And so I went hunting. Not an easy task this time, as you might imagine. Her name is Emily Jones… There is more than one Emily Jones – also as you might imagine. Tried Google… PAH!! Tried TwiX… Useless. Tried Instagram – fat chance. Hmmm… Tried our very own Discord server… Not a great deal of help there. So I stepped up my detective skills. I started to find little bits and bobs hither and thither.

Eventually I managed to piece together my findings (some or all of which might very well be wrong). She is young and English (despite sounding thoroughly American). She is actually from a city called Guildford, as far as I can tell. Which would make sense, because I have a strong inkling she was introduced to the New Artist Spotlight by our very own Jane Marie (also from Guildford) – perhaps a friend of Jane’s singer, Jessica Mia? Who knows… I assume Emily is from Guildford, solely based on the fact that she played at the renowned little music venue, The Boileroom, Guildford, in September of last year (that’s 2025, by the way – get in to that way of thinking). This gig was not part of a tour, so it only stands to reason – once paired with various other findings – that she is indeed from Guildford. Phew! So, does she play solo? Well, yes and no. Actually, no and no, if I’m being precise about things… You see, there’s Emily Jones’ solo project, and there’s her band, New Judgement. But solo, she sings with two others. And even more confusingly, those two others are not members of New Judgement. Or maybe New Judgement has disbanded! Or maybe Emily records with different people to those she plays live with. I just don’t know! It’s all so confusing, and there just isn’t the information anywhere!

Let us start and finish with THIS song, for now. We begin the year in lowercase. ‘by my name’ is the title of Emily’s latest release. Alex Jones is on guitar and bass, while Ben Jones is on drums and is the producer. Potential brothers…? Could this be a fond, family affair…? Going by the soft, personal quality of the song, I wouldn’t remotely be surprised. Emily writes and sings all. I chose this song for our first soiree of 2026 because it is so utterly real. So live and natural. We start with a plucked acoustic which sounds as though it was recorded in a sleepy Paris café at 7am in Spring. It’s as if the whole scene takes place in this café, and Emily simply works there making cappuccino and serving sweet, overpriced delectables. She hears the guitar – played by a customer at the window; his cap’s peak shutting out the most harmful sunrise rays. Emily rids her hands of a dirty fork and a chipped saucer, and starts to join the balladeer. The dryness in her voice is refreshing. It has no studio magic. The peaked stranger smiles as his friend with far too much bubbly hair appears from another corner of the deserted eatery. This bassist needs no peak. Emily’s voice is the true star of the show – make no mistake. She has the experienced black soul of Alicia Keys and the youthful white innocence of Lizzy McAlpine. Quite an astonishing voice, if I’m honest. So effortlessly perfect, but without any of the perfection that leaves us cold and unfeeling.

After several subtly brilliant vocal inflections (notoriously bloody hard to do), this café comes to life with a warmer hue of spotlight. It becomes a venue. The drums roll in, and Emily’s “workmates” join her in harmony. She smiles with a sideways glance at her colleague, as if she is thinking “this is so exciting but I’ve got to stay cool about it all”. The apron is off, and Emily walks through the small café with such a light, playful manner; stroking the backs of chairs as she goes; picking up the odd soiled paper napkin. She looks so natural there. Just another day, except perhaps wearing a little more lip-gloss than usual. Such purity in her voice, but with just the right amount of subtle snarly edge. Maybe not snarl. More a sleeping tiger’s purr. It is easy to tell that her voice has the potential for more guts, but that this song simply wouldn’t allow for such gusto. ‘by my name’ is such a beautiful introduction to the year. Not full-force, but a sophisticated easing-in. This girl will go far. I just know it. Welcome to the club, Emily Jones!

This song really caught me off guard in the best way. It just kind of eases in and before you realize it, you’re completely pulled into the mood. Emily’s voice feels so close and intimate, like she’s right there in the room, and when the harmonies and bass start to come in it just gets warmer and warmer. Nothing feels overdone, it’s just really honest and calm and beautiful. Definitely the kind of song you want to sit with for a while.

A nice and peaceful, slow and beautiful way to start the year at the Corner. Gorgeous song and loved the nice storytelling to set the scene of the song. I completely understand that notion of being as close to anonymous as possible in this day and age, with all the cyber crimes and just not nice people out there that do very mean things for no reason. It’s also extremely frustrating, can imagine very much so for you when trying to do some journalism work on an artist. Cheers CC!

Welcome to 2026, Charles. Nice gentle choice to start the year. Exactly like the world isn’t at the moment, as we seem to be on our way to WW3. I to will heavily reduce my comments, mostly due to having a stinking cold at the moment, deep joy. I wish Emily every success with her lovely singing ❤️

I relate to your quest for information about a particular artist. I’ve had to do some introductions of artists that I was not familiar with and ran into the same thing. You would think there would be all kinds of information out there for anyone making music but that’s not the case. I loved your comments around the setting of the song. The review was very enlightening. I read it before listening. I was prepared to be impressed by the song and I was. There is a warm intimate feel in Emily’s voice with only the sweet guitar in the first part of the song and unadorned with gobs of reverb. This song has a beautiful simplicity. The nice cozy feel is enhanced by the excellent harmonies, the nice acoustic guitar, and the warm round tones of the bass. And the slow build of the track adds dynamics. Thanks for the review. Charles painted a beautiful word picture of what could be the backstory to this gorgeous song by Emily Jones. This song is perfect proof of how simplicity and elegance stand out boldly in our world of musical technology. This one is like a breath of fresh air 😎

Really enjoyed this one, Charles. There’s something refreshing about the way you take the time to really sit with a song and let it unfold, even when the artist themselves feels half hidden from the world. Your description of by my name captured its warmth and restraint perfectly, especially the way Emily’s voice carries both confidence and vulnerability without leaning on studio tricks. It feels like the right kind of song to ease into a new year, and you made that case with clarity and care. Welcome to 2026!!!

Such a warmth to Emily’s voice! I love the sweet and simpleness to this tune. The guitar starts so pleasantly and then, her voice comes in so eloquently that it gives me a small shiver. It is so pure that it doesn’t need spit or polish, just the relaxing tone of what is. Going to watch out for more from Emily Jones! Great choice, Charles!

Happy New Year, and what a great way to start it with a review of this track. The vocals are awesome, but what I particularly like is the soft warm tone of the bass which helps to create the overall feel of the track. I really love the vocal parts in the lead up to the end too.

The opening paragraph has been especially relatable as I’ve returned to work this week, as there’s still that grace period where we all have to ask each other how it went, because it would be too rude NOT to, you know?

I read the article earlier today, but I wanted to wait with writing a comment until I had the time to listen to song. Contrary to what someone else wrote, I think a big part of the charm of your reviews are the part before you dig into the song of the week. I did miss that this week, And, with the kids asleep, I can listen to the song now.. Perfect song to wind down right now I must say. I really liked the sound of this on the first listen.. I hardly picked up on any lyrics at all on the first listen, as I started to write this while listening. A few months ago, I always listened… Show More

Well done tracking down a new talented artist to listen to! Lovely song, I thought it was very pleasant how the vocal harmonies come in after a minute, letting the track build, and then some well-structured instrumental solos are added late on! 👍🔥

Indeed, a beautiful voice and a lovely song. And Guildford (if that is where Emily is from) has some good musical heritage with the Strangers coming from there and Eric Clapton not too far away!

Beautifully done, CC! I love when you jump right into your breakdown of the song elements using your expert ear, so this was quite a treat. I think it’s what helps to make the NAS song reviews stand out from others. You also really hit the nail on the head about the need for indie artists to make themselves a bit easier to discover. Hopefully it will inspire Emily and others to update their bios. I’m thinking it might be time to do my own!

¡Feliz año, Charles, o mejor dicho Detective Connolly! Show More

Last selections are tending to be more on the acoustic / to the bone side. I like that! It gets richer toward the end. Anyway i could spot some interesting chord changes here…not the classic folk ballad … is it an acoustic guitar or classic one? It has some nylon delicacy….maybe it is a ukulele or mandolin. But it is a sweet song

Charles, you described the sound of this lovely song perfectly! It does sound live in a cafe, impromptu, yet with a gentle, natural polish. Emily’s voice is wonderfully full of nuanced phrasing. The bass solo is a great touch as well. The harmonies sound sweet, like a modern Andrews Sisters! A grand way to start the year, in a very unassuming manner. Not really grand at all. Very down to earth and yes, real. A refreshing reminder of musical in its natural setting…live. Thank you for your research and presentation of Emily Jones. Much appreciated Charles. And congratulations Emily (if you’re reading this).

Thanks for weighing in! Certainly wasn’t an insult, in fact I just wrote a lengthy defense of this very review in the discord artist chat. Some people simply prefer song reviews that focus more on songs themselves. I’m one of them. And I certainly have absolutely no need to thinly veil anything. If I had an issue with his review I’d tell Charles directly. It’s my responsibility to do so as the person whose idea it was to do NAS song reviews in the first place. Out of curiosity, which of his past song review intros did you find most delightful?
