Welcome all to π—–π—Όπ—»π—»π—Όπ—Ήπ—Ήπ˜†β€™π˜€ 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿, a series of weekly reviews by Charles Connolly – an artist in his own right. Here, Charles delves into the greatest brand new singles brought to you by the best unsigned artists on our electrifying and eclectic set of π™‰π™šπ™¬ π˜Όπ™§π™©π™žπ™¨π™© π™Žπ™₯π™€π™©π™‘π™žπ™œπ™π™© playlists.

Charles theorises…

What is music? β€œWait, wait, wait a sec… You’re actually going to talk about music??” – I know. You’d think I’d be sick of music by now. But no, I ain’t the blasphemous kind. β€œBut you NEVER talk about music in your intros.” – Yes, I know, I usually write about something like ”How to overcome the pressures of the world”, or β€œWhat came first, the chicken or the duck?”, or β€œHave you noticed the increasing presence of the hip flask lately?”… But this time I thought I’d go all out and speak about music. It is, after all, the time and the place. So. Back to my initial question… What IS music? This is something about which people will argue forever. But I’m not going to go into avant-garde nonsense that in my eyes (ears) is simply not worth bothering with. I am talking about REAL music. Ya know, instruments and all that. Something that doesn’t make one scratch one’s head, and something that one actually enjoys, as opposed to reluctantly putting oneself through, for the sake of being kind to the β€œartist” or in an attempt to broaden one’s horizons. One’s horizon is probably quite big enough, and does not need broadening. So you’ve got your instruments, be them analog or electronic. You’ve got yourself a singer. Bravo! That’s basically done, right? Well, you’ll need a place and a means to record. Okay then, CHECK! Got all of the above. Hit record, we’re ready! β€œOkay guys, what’s the name of the song?”, the engineer says through the studio’s intercom.

Name of the song? What song? Christ, we need a song! Okay, we’ll do ‘Blah-Blah’ by Blah-Blah. β€œNo, no. You didn’t get this time in the studio just so you could record a cover of a song that has already been recorded. We need an original song”. Okay, well that shouldn’t be too hard. I mean, there are millions of artists in the world. They don’t seem to find it that hard. Let’s try a few chords. But how do I know what goes with what? Well, you can either use your ear (nice vs not nice) or use a bit of music theory. But what’s THAT?? Ah, it’s like the guidebook for the whole of music. It shows you what works and how things work. Okay, so how do I learn this music theory thing? β€œWell, here’s an 800 page book on the basics of it”… I don’t think this is going to work. And you can kiss goodbye to that studio time!

β€œKnowing music theory will help you achieve the ability to write music. In fact, it will GIVE you the ability to write music”. This is what they say. And I suppose I sort of get that. I mean, say for example you have a 4-chord sequence repeating, and you want to write a melody over the top, music theory will help you work out the key of the sequence, and therefore give you the notes needed in order to write said melody. Great! Well that really is genuinely helpful then! But there is a but. A BIG but!! (no jokes please). Music is supposed to be an art, not a science. Writing a piece of music should not be like solving a simple (or complicated) maths equation. We are not supposed to be reaching for charts, grids and books in order to make art. Music theory really only works when you know it so well that you can afford to break the rules. Playing by the rules will give you correct music. Which can be rather dull, let’s face it. But the greatest art is usually formed when finding the thing that works that shouldn’t work. Where music theory tells you it’s wrong, yet you tingle with its rightness. I call this, the exception to the rule. I have never known music theory. I think many of you think or assume that I know it inside out. I am occasionally praised by other musicians for my use of a certain mode or scale. And I have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about. When asked about the key of one of my songs, I cannot say. Partly because I don’t know, but also because I have a feeling my songs change key throughout the piece.

So, if one is going to learn the whole of music theory only to break the rules, why learn it in the first place? Good point! I never learnt it, and my own music isn’t that terrible. The thing is, music theory is an option. While it can help and has helped millions of people through the ages, it has also flummoxed many more millions. And to a great proportion of the world’s artists, it can be a hindrance. Rules are good, but I personally try to find the exception to the rule. It’s simply more interesting that way. Not to mention more fun. Music theory is not a must, and there are even people who flaunt their ignorance of it to great effect. Before getting into this week’s pick, I will leave you with this thought. Could music theory alone have given us Strawberry Fields Forever…? I think not. It is all exception and no rule.

Speaking of freedom from the rules, I bring you bigbaldben. Yes, all lowercase, and all one word, because who said it HAD to start with a capital letter and have spaces?? You see, this man spends his life breaking rules. But he is not cryptic, and he is not subtle. He is brazen with his rule-breaking, and his personality in general. He does not hide. He does not mystify. He uses no smoke, he uses no mirrors. He is bold (as well as bald). For the conforms of informal formal writing, I will capitalise his name. He is Ben. And what a refreshingly fine and level-headed chap he is too! Ben makes rock music. Pure and simple. It’s rock. There’s no other way about it. This is nothing but rock. There’s distorted guitar, drums and bass. There’s a natural squeal to his voice that lends itself perfectly to rock. Basically, he was born to rock. So that’s the sound aspect of his oeuvre. As to his songs, though, oh BOY. This is anything but pure and simple. This is NOT what one would expect. While everyone else is in agreement that we should turn right at the junction, Ben turns left. I think if Ben were to build a house from scratch, he would start with the roof. And it would work. We’d all be left staring, scratching our heads, asking each other β€œHow did he do that? That shouldn’t work”. But it DOES work. He made it work. And he does all this so naturally. He is not just being annoying. β€œNormal” music just doesn’t appeal to him. At least in terms of creation. He is the exception. And this is The Exception.

On the subject of lyrics (which we weren’t), someone so musically unusual would often not normally mind so much about the words. These words would very much come way down the list of priorities. But this is Ben. Ben who often starts with the words, or at least the lyrical theme. An unusual theme where he talks about the courting of his wife. Now, courting! THERE’S an old fashioned pastime for ya! β€œWhat you up to today?” – β€œI’m a-goin’ out courtin’, yessir I am”. Time for a spot of courting? Don’t mind if I do! For Ben though, it was more coaxing than courting. He completely failed, then gave up. Then the girl changes her mind, telling him she actually DID end up liking him in β€œthat way”, just as he had accepted she was a goner. I mean, REALLY!! I do feel sorry for men sometimes. The things we go through just for a spot of lifelong love. Ugh. Anyway, these lyrics of his are very clever, and very unusual. It is about that time between coaxing a friend in to being more than a friend, and that time she said she liked him. This in-between time was spent trying to forget about her. Trying not to see her. Trying to rid himself of feelings. He had had this before with other girls, and he had succeeded. But she was the exception. She just wouldn’t leave his mind.

Until she did (or so he thought). By this point, Ben felt able to meet her again as the close friends they once were. On said meeting, she popped the unbelievable news that she had feelings for him. He then needed more time alone to digest this. Poor bugger. Anyway, in the end, it all turned out peachy. And we all like peaches. Well, I used to be allergic to peaches, but I always liked them. Although he does not mention this fruity ending, he does allude to it in a subtle way. I would like to make it publicly known that the line β€œyou and me are a toxic mess” is somewhat artistic licence, and that the couple was never quite as malignant as the line might suggest.

Back to music. All those famous composers you can think of from the days of black and white and wigs and tights, were of course au fait with music theory. Otherwise we wouldn’t have all those monotonous pieces by Mozart, or even those dramatic operas by Hitler’s fave, Wagner! Music theory was vital in those days. But I suspect this is simply because this was how it was done back then. Like how the great painters had to master drawing, perspective and proportion before even p-p-p-picking up a p-p-p-paintbrush. In terms of painting, I still agree with this method. But with music…? I’m not so sure. Unlike Mozart, Wagner broke rules in music. That’s probably why Hitler liked him so much… But I always wonder how Wagner would have felt had he not been constrained by these rules in the first place. Let’s ask him.

β€œMr. Wagner, how would you feel had you not been constrained by music theory in the first place?”

β€œWell, I was never actually constrained by it because I never actually knew anything about it. I just do what I do, and I like it”. This is a rather peculiar answer that I was not expecting. As I look up, I realise there is no hair on this big man’s head. I also then realise that I am talking to a living person with an American accent. I further realise that I have in fact got the wrong Wagner. This is Ben Wagner aka bigbaldben. Bugger. I suppose this is why I am not a journalist.

So! What is it that Ben does, that makes him so alternative? He sets fire to the whole of music theory, and builds a thing of beauty from its embers. Heavy, head-banging, Foo Fighters-esque beauty. He stacks a cube on top of a pyramid, and makes it balance. He adds salt instead of sugar, yet we only taste the sweetness. Toxic sweetness, of course. Gotta stay in character. Ben turns dissonant into something positively sonnant. He takes out dis, and replaces it with dat. But what’s weird about his music is how flowy it is (β€œFlowy” being a technical term that you’ll find on page 273 of Music Theory For Dummies). Ben leaps from unrelated chord to unrelated chord, with clashing harmonies galore, yet all so smoothly. Which means, he really does know what he’s doing. He hasn’t just got lucky. While he may not know anything about music theory, he evidently understands music and sound, and feel. Which to me is the most worthwhile music theory. Unfortunately though, this is not scribable. Which I love. All hail the new Wagnerian era!

I did wonder if Ben was actually related to Richard Wagner… But I don’t care too much for theory. Theory can’t buy me love.

Charles has again come up with a fresh new review and it’s about fresh new music from bigbaldbenmusic 😎 Ben has clearly demonstrated a great song is built on creativity, feeling and what sounds cool. Music theory has its place, but without those other things Ben brings to the table (or the ears) it can be mighty dull 😁

Excellent review, I play a lot of tradtional Irish music, there are some amazing musicians out there and most havn’t got a clue of music theory. Its nice to have but not a requirement for great music. Excellent song, keep breaking the rules Ben.

Great read! Theory can be good and bad, that is quite true. Gotta go with the feels, most times. As for the song, it’s great, the review encapsulates very well what’s on display here. Big Bald Ben surprises me every time. The cube on top of a pyramid metaphor is perfect. I love well placed dissonance in a song. Great job!

..& this is why I love that I can say, I know that BBB! I didnt know tho truly how much we have in common. Similar story w/my wife -tried to get those β€˜digits’ back when I was 14 at a Fastball/Semisonic/Marcy’s Playground show (of all places)..didn’t work the 1st time, nor the 2nd; but 3 times the Exception! 3 times the lady? Right, laddy?! Sooo much to say about how ExCePtIoNaL this track is – I love how you also start your writing process w/just the words and/or lyrics, as I do. Also, that you don’t follow them thar rulez either ! Typical Wagner! 😝

Another enjoyable review Charles, I agree that if someone knows music theory they shouldn’t let that shackle them, although I guess that’s easier said than done. Good track choice as well, I got distinct Nirvana vibes from it.

Show Less

I have mixed thoughts on this….(not the song – that is no doubt great which I will discover soon after this)… I started off writing by ear as a child, then was told ‘I must learn the piano because I had a great ear for music”.. but I HATED it… despite going on to do grade 8 piano, grade 6 saxophone and a degree in music, (all self inflicted by my stupid self) I still write by ear today and I can’t sight read for toffee…4 part harmony, analysis of C20th music (avant garde) and Baroque harpsichord bangers should have been enough to end my journey, death by boredom! The first bigbaldben song immediately pointed in the direction of The Galactic Cowboys. Turned out we both share a weakness for this band. I carefully read this wonderful review by the great CC. I know I have to pay extra attention, if he chooses a song to review. Almost always I totally agree with his judgement, today is no Exception. But one thing puzzles me. That ‘no theory’-part. When I look Ben in his bigblueeye I read ‘A\{{A}}’. Wagnerish code for an exception? I think this guy knows damn well what he is doing. Great release, you galactic cowboy!

“Blah-Blah” by “Blah-Blah” is a great song and I’m glad it got a mention, nice one Charles. Controversially though, I will say that it doesn’t compare to the awesomeness of “The Exception” by bigbaldben. I heard the clip of this song on Ben’s Instagram on release day and immediately went to listen to the full track. It’s so great, it took me back to when I started out learning Nirvana songs on my guitar when I was 15 or so, and I do love Ben’s choice of chord structure here. His vocals compliment the style of his songs so well too, there’s no way I could get those grungey vocal tones, so huge respect! More than anything though, Ben is… Show More

Brilliant review, in addition music theory doesn’t really define talents in my own view, with theory a rule have to be followed which doesn’t really give room for creativity. Artists that push out of that boundary sound distinct hence give the world unique and distinct sounds.

Music theory can be a helpful tool, but as Bigbaldben shows, you don’t need to follow all the rules to create amazing music. Sometimes breaking the rules leads to the most interesting and unique sounds. 🎸 Hats off to bigbaldben for his innovative approach and to Mr. CC for another insightful review! 🎢

Ha – I love this review so much. But first let’s clear something up. The duck! The duck came first Charles. By tens of millions of years! The chicken (as we know a chicken to be) is a domesticated creation which has only been around for 8k years (give or take). So not even a close race. I’m sure you drop these things in just to bait me! But back to the start. Why do I love this review? Well I’m getting to that.. (so impatient!). Because it’s about theory (or a lack of). In my typical analytical way – a few years back – I decided to ‘learn music’ and began by studying theory books on my daily commute. Oh jeez! It was hard going and the compositions I came up with were linear and boring. I almost gave up and then boom, Covid hit and along with it an ability for me to work from home. The theory book went in the bin and my guitar came out of the cupboard getting picked up for a little noodling between zoom calls. I used my ears… and cluck me (obligatory chicken joke) it turned out that a gazillion hours of ‘listening’ does actually tell you what sounds right and what does not. I was writing songs in no time and changing keys naturally without even knowing I was doing it! All very liberating. So hearing about the big bald fella is great! Fabulous in fact. I love Ben’s music and love it even more with this little bit of additonal insight. I was going to end with a joke but let’s duck that and make this the exception. πŸ¦†πŸ“πŸ˜Ž Show Less

I think theory is a great tool for looking at suggestions on where to take something next, or analyzing what you’ve already done (especially if you’re breaking the rules and want to know what the heck you just did πŸ˜‚). Do you NEED it to write though? Absolutely not. I would bet that a large majority of musicians today were already playing and/or writing music before they ever picked up a theory book. Speaking of rule breaking, I love bigbaldben’s unique sound! Rock is my first love, so I’ve taken to many of his songs quite quickly. Reminds me a little bit of Blur, a little bit of Radiohead – but the vocal harmonies are so different, I can’t even think of a close comparison. He’s definitely a standout! Show Less

Great review that made me think as usual… true confession… none of the 6 of us in F2S can read music more than at a rudimentary level despite 3 of us being proficient on multiple instruments lol

Music theory was definitely something I used more in school. Is it a helpful tool? Yes, but can u still write music without it? U betcha! πŸ˜‰ I learn more by ear (got it from my Dad) A great tune by a great musician bigbaldben! Always enjoy reading Mr. CC’s reviews as we get to know another artist better and himself too πŸ˜†

Oooooh what a unique and interesting track from bigbaldben!! I tried to learn music theory in school, I took a grade 3 exam and failed πŸ˜‚ it was always way over my head. I write with feeling, not theory, although I would like to learn more about it!

Do you write about music or about life? Even life has some rules and theories. But real life is not lived according to theories. You don’t even need a theory to live.

You were on fire with this review Charles. Wow. Spectacular prose. The whole music theory thing discussion is very interesting. I think it’s great for ear training, for availing oneself of all the different flavours and colours in the palettes. I occasionally deep dive into music theory when I want a new challenge, and then it sets me off on a tangent and I’m gone. I’m still not much the wiser as to what the names of some of my chords are even now. A bit like discovering Phthalocyanine Blue acrylic paint, learning when to use it, but not really remembering how to spell it 2 weeks later. But like you said, it doesn’t matter.

I’ve spoken to a few people who know their music theory and have said to them that I wish I knew some music theory and each of them have had the same reaction β€œWhy? It only constrains you” it’s funny I always thought it would make me a better musician and maybe it would but it seems the ones with the knowledge don’t all agree! bigbaldben is clearly one to prove them right! I can’t resist a good love story, and Ben’s is a great one. An unusual one I’m sure. Deffo the exception! πŸ™‚ I think it might make a decent romcom. πŸ€“ bigbaldben is one of my favorite NASians. Always brilliant rocking songs WITH nice melodies, some unexpected riffs and chord changes – AND a stunning sound. I mean, the guitar sound is killer on this track. And the voice on here is just awesome. Sting says a song needs the element of surprise and bigbaldben would definitely get Sting’s sign of approval (as if he’d need it… πŸ˜‚). As for the old composers, writing down the score was the only way to save the work, to remember it and to… Show More

Totally would be a brilliant plot for a RomCom!! Sting is right. I’d like Sting’s seal of approval. Oh yes, you’re quite right about the actual writing down of the music itself. I hadn’t thought of that. But that still isn’t to do with the composition itself. That’s just a paper recording.
