Beautiful and calming, I can imagine Surprised being played on top of an old long boat floating down a river in the Spring.

And the winner for the most succinct review of 2025 goes to…. Seriously though doing that on an instrumental was clever , and if anyone puts out music that speaks for itself, it’s Rich . He is amazing …

Ah, let the music do the talking! I love it! This track is exquisite indeed! And I love the gentle nudge to listen to it this way. The arrangement is stunning, as instruments and elements weave and flow throughout. What a truly lovely experience it is to listen to anything Rich does. And mixed to perfection with all the details given their space. You two fine fellas make beautiful music together and the world is better for it! Thank you both!

Expertly written. Honestly, a modern literaty masterpiece. Shakespeare himself could not have expressed the sentiments contained within better! A rollercoaster of joy, sadness, anger, a healthy distrust of the government, mixed with a pinch of hopefulness – thank you. I’m joking – but the brevity did send me immediately over to the album; it was very calming to listen to. Expertly mixed, and sonically pleasant on many levels.

Just listened to Rich Allen’s Silent Witness (The Instrumentals), and wow… it really speaks without saying a single word. The track feels like it’s quietly unfolding around me, each note carrying its own weight. There’s this calm intensity that pulls me in, almost like the music itself is watching, observing, feeling. Charles Connolly’s “review” actually makes sense now—leaving the page empty mirrors the track perfectly. Sometimes silence really is the loudest statement, and this instrumental proves it. I feel like I need to sit with it for a while, let it sink in, because there’s so much emotion hiding in those spaces between the notes. ✊

That “No words.” line really made me smile. Maybe it was a nod to the lack of vocals, but it also fits so perfectly with the way instrumental music works. Sometimes you really don’t need words. Hans Christian Andersen said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” That’s always stuck with me, because it’s exactly what instrumental music does — it goes straight past language and hits you somewhere deeper. Victor Hugo had a similar take: “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.” Even Miles Davis leaned into the idea when he said, “It’s not the notes you play, it’s the notes you don’t play.” The spaces and the sounds themselves do the talking. For those of us who make music without vocals, it’s never about what’s missing — it’s about how the instruments are the voice. And sometimes the best response really is what you wrote: no words. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1). “No words.” (Charles 9/30). “The rest is silence.” (Prince Hamlet) But is it? That’s the instrumental question.

I had something else to say … but I keep getting lost in this wonderment of melodic craftsmanship. Kinda weird when Rich’s voice doesn’t come in when you’d expect it from being familiar with some of these – but it does help one appreciate the thoughtful musicality of the instrumentation (not to mention the spacious & luscious production).

(I’m sure the face/soul thing has been said before). But, I digress…. Letting the listener use their own imagination is a rare thing these days. Thanks for capturing your moments, Rich! Like Reply 1 Like James Avelino Sep 30, 2025 Just listened to Rich Allen’s Silent Witness (The Instrumentals), and wow… it really speaks without saying a single word. ✊ Like Reply Charles Connolly Oct 07, 2025 Replying to James Avelino Now try it without A.I. – Oh, let me guess: “good song good review”. Sickening and so disrespectful. Like Reply Jane Marie Sep 30, 2025 Speaks volumes …..🌟 Like Reply 1 Like Innovaniac Music Sep 30, 2025 Wow this was a surprise! I am now listening. Oddly, this music is exactly what I needed in this moment, so rich and beautiful. Like Reply 1 Like ebolutionate Sep 30, 2025 At first I thought my browser wasn’t loading properly. AH, let the music do the talking this time. Edited Like Reply 1 Like William Lovitt Sep 30, 2025 Well, Charles caught me by surprise until I scrolled way down. I thought I had to refresh my browser. Rich didn’t catch me by surprise with the lovely instrumental sounds of his beautiful composition washing over me and making me smile 😎 Edited Like Reply 1 Like Faded Element Sep 30, 2025 I think u said just enough for this review Mr. CC 👏 What beautiful soothing music Rich. Surprised is my favourite until I listen to them again 😃 Fantastic work man. I love how every track has the right amount of space to let parts shine and yet is such a full sound if that makes any sense 😆 Like Reply 1 Like Show more comments
