Charles winces and wondersโ€ฆ

Itโ€™s a funny oleโ€™ world, innit. So much is going on, all the time, everywhere. Some good; mostly not. Yet weโ€™re rarely aware of any of it. Sometimes itโ€™s due to our own ignorance, but usually itโ€™s because weโ€™re kept in the dark. Why is it when someone says โ€œnothing to see hereโ€, there is always something to see thereโ€ฆ? Most people take what theyโ€™re given. Most people donโ€™t question. With eyes wide open, most people only see. They do not observe and they do not perceive. They do not think. If they argue, itโ€™s because others are arguing. A sheep will stand not comfortably but not uncomfortably. It will simply stand there. It will only bolt if other sheep are moving at speedโ€ฆ So, why? Why do we react so automatically? Is it ease? Is it laziness? Is it trust? Or is it none of theseโ€ฆ? Are we actually all thinking the same โ€œthat canโ€™t be rightโ€, but are too afraid to open our mouths? Are we perhaps simply scared of querying? Nervous of the potentially worse response? Maybe we just donโ€™t WANT to know. Maybe the whole โ€œignorance is blissโ€ thing is safer in our minds. Calmer. Weโ€™re all in this together anyway, so maybe if thereโ€™s something bad, itโ€™s bad for everyone so I wonโ€™t be aloneโ€ฆ? That seems a rather strange frame of mind to me. Surely it should be more like the words of The Animals: โ€œWe Gotta Get Out Of This Placeโ€, rather than to all go down togetherโ€ฆ

When something smells fishy to you, do you sit back and eat the fish? Or do you go into detective mode? Do you try to get to the bottom of the matter? Or perhaps you’re the absolute ultra end of the spectrum, in that as soon as you are suspicious, you shout “LIES!!”, without any proof or even reason, and then quickly bugger off to count guitar strings…? I think this way is just as blind as eating the fish. You’ve decided the scent before opening your nostrils. Whichever way you might be, I think the most important thing is to not follow the crowd. In the words of The Beatles, โ€œThink For Yourselfโ€. I am not quite saying that you should trust no one and question everything, but that you should perhaps reason with yourself should something strike you as – to quote Dom Piper – โ€œA Little Oddโ€. It can even be bad for your mental state of mind to just nod and take it. But PLEASE donโ€™t become a blind protester, protesting for the sake of protest. Thatโ€™s just annoying and pointless. If you become a full-on spy and trust no one, paranoia can ensue, and you might start to lose your mind, not to mention your friends. But I would suggest to be on your guard.

How many of you have been told something that seems strange to you? And yet you watch in wonder and subtle astonishment as everyone around you seems to be acting as though they have been told something completely normalโ€ฆ? Have they all lost their mind? Have YOU?? Itโ€™s an uncomfortable feeling. An isolating feeling. A feeling that puts you outside the comfy box, in the cold reality. Are they all blind? Are you seeing something that isnโ€™t there? The itchy discomfort begins. You ask some close friends their thoughts on the matter. Rather more calm, they feel the same as you. Which in turn makes you feel rather more calm. The knowledge that you are not losing your mind, or that if you ARE losing your mind, that youโ€™re not doing it alone. That in itself can be some weird kinda freaky comfort. The most important thing is to remain calm. BUT HOW CAN YOU REMAIN CALM WHEN SOMEONE SAYS THERE IS NOTHING TO SEE HERE WHEN THERE SO CLEARLY IS SOMETHING TO SEE HERE???!!!! God damn it. Simmer down. Hush those boots of yours. Take heed from your calm friend. Donโ€™t exacerbate the matter, but DO get to the bottom of things. Itโ€™s all about the bottom. The calm bottom. Less Dirty Harry; more Columbo. You might feel cooler and it might be more fun to pretend to be Dirty Harry, but it just ainโ€™t right. However wonky your eye, be Columbo. Wear the raincoat.

No, I havenโ€™t entirely lost my mind. I just felt like going somewhere different today. And today, we are discovering the unobliterated truth that is Unobliterated. An Englishman in Portugal who has just released his latest single, โ€˜Nothing To See Hereโ€™. Of course, he wasnโ€™t born by the name Unobliterated, for that would be silly. He was in fact labelled Gary Taylor. And still is. For some reason, now that Iโ€™m familiar with the name โ€œUnobliteratedโ€, I forget that it isnโ€™t actually a real word. And for some reason, I always say Gary Taylor in a Scottish accent with a slow drawl. But thatโ€™s probably just me. Gary and I have worked together in the past. The recent past. His previous single (โ€˜Light Years Apartโ€™), in fact. And it was one of the most straightforward, pleasing projects I have ever worked on. A true professional gentleman who had almost gone overboard with the planning in terms of getting me what I needed in order to mix said piece. I had an excellently performed, played, sung, programmed and produced piece, complete with perfectly labelled stems, notes, and even colour-coded spreadsheets. I had not yet told him that I am allergic to spreadsheets, but I only had a mild reaction in the end. There was such order, thought and effort in place. It brought me back to the days when people used to bother and be helpful. Let me just quickly add though, that this is absolutely NOT a dig at any of my clients for their own personal process. I donโ€™t really mind how I receive things, as long as the clients are kind and respectful (which on the whole they are). I was simply unused to this level of methodicality. Not a word. For this new song, Gary wanted to do what he usually does: do it alone. He went back to his usual ways of involving no one. Well, except for Flynn…

Although all of Garyโ€™s songs sound different, they all have something that tells me they are Unobliterated. Thereโ€™s something 90s about them. Something that suggests that Noel Gallagher was involved. He wasnโ€™t. But also something a little more up to date than this. There is usually a perfect blend of analogue instruments and electronica, with a little bit of psychedelic Eastern charm thrown in for good measure. A fusion that is barely apparent at first because of how well each song is put together. โ€˜Nothing To See Hereโ€™, however, has more of the analogue and less of the electronic. Thereโ€™s quite a bit of The Cure, at least that I hear in the verse. This definitely feels and sounds like a tight band playing as they have been for years. Yet itโ€™s all just Gary Taylor (with a slow drawl). Right from the very tom intro, there is urgency and energy. He’s a big fan of making drums and percussion do what they were born to do. Drums don’t have to just slam. These drums infiltrate the song with pulsing electricity. The bass slinks its way with nods, shoulder shrugs, dancing fingers and open mouth. The eerie guitar lines prowl with insistence, caring not about leaving footprints, while the organ creates an atmosphere so chilling. We pause at the door to the beginning. The door opens and Gary starts to sing. Ooh, it’s good. Centre-stage, with bright, airy tambourine, he opens up. The band supports his sentiment from all sides. What a verse! But the pre-chorus goes heavier, deeper and darker. There’s that Eastern charm. And then, a perfectly catchy chorus to please those who wish for it. As is quite often the case with me, I prefer the pre-chorus to the actual chorus. But wordily speaking, they are of identical class. Let’s talk about those woyds.

Despite being somewhat wordy in my weekly ways, the words of a song are not something into which I often delve too deeply. But in this case, I feel they are the shining glory of the piece. This doesnโ€™t feel like a piece of music on to which lyrics have been simply superimposed. Whether it is the case or not, this feels like the lyrics came first. Unusually for me, I zoned in to the words on first listen. Normally this doesnโ€™t happen until somewhere between the 3rd and 8th listen. Basically, music is normally everything to me. Sure, Iโ€™ll probably usually be singing along to the chorus before the end of the first listen, but I wonโ€™t have really listened to the whole saga. More just the catchy chorus. And even then, I might not have taken in the meaning of the words. Theyโ€™re more just verbal utterances in rhythmic form. โ€˜Nothing To See Hereโ€™ has to be one of my favourite lyrical gifts within the New Artist Spotlight community. I always hailed Dom Piper as the greatest lyricist on the NAS, but I do feel that Gary takes on the mantle while Dom continues to be โ€œin between songsโ€. While Gary doesnโ€™t quite present a full narrated story (often with characters), he does however manage to grab oneโ€™s attention and make one see sense. There is a looser style in Garyโ€™s lyrics, but that somehow makes it more casual, as if heโ€™s having a heart-to-heart chat, man to man, or man to woman. Despite being looser, there is urgency and there is desperation. There is honesty and there is frankness. This is reality, like a cold, hard marble. We hear his incredulous disbelief, and itโ€™s begging! Begging you to listen. Begging you to nod along. Not just to the beat, but in affirmative response.

I think this could be my favourite from Gary so far. And I didnโ€™t even get on to the sumptuous bridgeโ€ฆ Or the fact that the harmonies were sung by Flynn Taylor… Or who that isโ€ฆ Oh, just listen, will you? While there might be nothing to see here, thereโ€™s most definitely something to HEAR here. Hear, Hear!

I must now bugger off and count guitar strings. Iโ€™d make a spreadsheet, but my allergyโ€™s back. Sorry, Iโ€™ve got nothing to say here.

When an artist carves out something that is noticeably their sound or their “thing,” that’s special stuff! Gary has done it! It’s not easy.

There is an implied heaviness here to me. In other words, distort those guitars and shout/scream the vocals and voila you have a very heavy beast indeed. The song has a Steven Wilson vibe for me. The choices of guitar tones and vocal approach add a Pink Floyd influence as well (especially the bridge). So I guess for me it’s got a bit of the ol’ prog built in around a rather dancey chorus. Quite brilliant as it hits with a lot of layers and subliminal imagery across its canvas. Congrats on another killer track Unobliterated. And thank you Charles for all you see a hear!

Trust no-one Mr Mulder. There’s Nothing to See Here. But there is something to read… as Charle’s unpacks the results of this project, aka song, with the talented & highly organised Gary Taylor, aka Unobliterated. Charles describes pulsing drums, slinking bass, eerie guitar lines & lyrics that are the shining glory of the piece. Congratulations to all involved in this creation! ๐Ÿค˜๐ŸŽต

What a great track this is. I totally get The Cure analogy made as the bass and toms in the verses reminds me of the Pornography album, nice and dark with chord progressions that capture the imagination. It also reminds me a bit of Porcupine Tree in respect of the vocals and feel. The chorus is catchy and adds a bit of contrast and length-wise is just right as doesn’t overstay its welcome allowing us to plunge back into the darkness again.

I listened to this track over the weekend and loved it from first listen! I also found out from Gary not too long ago that we both like Pearl Jam, and I can definitely hear their influences on this track, particularly in the guitars. I also really like Gary’s vocals in that upper range too, there’s such a great tone and delivery to it. I antihista-mean it when I say sorry about your spreadsheet allergy Charles. It must be Hell in an Excel. That’s about as far as my puns will go… no wait, Punobliterated. Ok, I’m done.

This was a good read, and I chuckled at the Columbo reference… With regards to our choice of perception, I often retreat into the ‘ignorance is bliss’ mindset myself (or as Kurt Cobain put it: ‘I think I’m dumb, or maybe just happy…’). And it’s always a nice experience to hear a song for the first time having been given some back story and context. ‘Nothing to See Here’ is a beautifully-crafted track, thanks for introducing it to me.

In some regard, we are all just sheep giving into the social requirements of our existence. Sad facts. We can’t stand and fight for every injustice, it’s impossible. When someone says “Nothing to see here”, I simply think “obviously, there is… ” and calmy continue on worrying about my own problems. Though I do love Columbo. I’m glad Noel wasn’t on this track. I heard he’s difficult to work with. ๐Ÿ˜œ

All I can say to this is that humans are a strange lot. The vast majority are like sheep and just follow along for the ride, no matter what that ride is. There are those who follow blindly and then there are those who still follow, but behind closed doors object, but do nothing. Then there are the few who speak up or do something different. The outsiders. The rebels. Whatever you will call them. I agree that I think it’s just more comfortable and calm to just “go with the flow” despite where that flow might be heading. As for Unobliterated โ€” pure gloriousness. Everything I have heard by them, including this new track, is instantly great. Wonderful articleโ€ฆ Show More

Crowd mentality is a common phenomenon. The inability to critically think, criticize and analyze is what most people struggle with. Often basic ideas like asking relevant questions is becoming a lost art. โ€œNothing To See Hereโ€ is a great artistry and Unobliterated has a new fan in me! CC is as insightful as ever on this one. The irony of it all. When I read “nothing to see here” I wondered for a sec , what to expect. But let me say, in this era of fast paced music creation and consumption, there are people who still hold dearly to their hearts, the music that carries meaning and was well crafted by the Creator.. we must never loose sight of the efforts creatives put in. The area of lyricism is therefore always going to matter.. I truly feel encouraged to keep my head up and create music with good lyrics.. we are inspired..

โ€œWhile there might be nothing to see here, thereโ€™s most definitely something to HEAR here.โ€ Fully agree! And feeling something deeply doesnโ€™t always need a spotlight, NAS or otherwise. But it helps! I admire Gary’s organizational skills. I myself couldn’t begin to do it. My ADHD is very much unobliterated, and I have no use – let alone love – for spreadsheets, either. This is a great song by Unobliterated (and a fine but of mastering by you, Charles). Instruments were dialed right in and vocals sat at just the right depth. The lyrics were so spot on that I think it really does take a few listens to get the full effects. Chorus was great, but I really loved the bridge. It really took you on a little rabbit trail for a bit before fully bursting into the chorus again. I think that’s my favorite part. Great song, Gary, and great review, Charles.

Iโ€™ve been musing over these opening lines: ‘When someone says โ€œnothing to see hereโ€, there is always something to see thereโ€ฆ’ A powerful nudge toward questioning the surface, but also not going too far towards either end: believe everything polyannaism vs. believe nothing nihilism. The music sounds very much like 90s Britpop with a mild dose of Liam in the chorus. And the bridge that you didn’t get to is the highlight of the track!

Well, the holiday bounce has worn off and Dark Connolly is back. This is an excellent observation piece of the current confusion in the world. It seems that people are either in a cult, and believe everything the dear leader says, or totally bewildered as to why people fall for the snake oil spiel. Ironically, we have more information at our fingertips than at any time in history, yet so many choose to ignore this in favour of their “feelings”. Sadly, you can’t logic anyone out of their feelings. This weeks track encapsulates this perfectly. Excellent lyrics, supported by the slightly menacing post punk style. I also love the use of the drums as they add a tribal feel to the piece. Great track Gary, and props to Flynn on BVs, (Love a bit of nepotism๐Ÿ˜). Elevated progressive pop is where i’d put this track into. Catchy chorus, composite rhythms, complex structure…the sounds have nothing harsh or too ‘rock’, the listening flows easy until the end. The bassline on the chorus is the hidden gem of this already great track.

A poignantly timely song review that definitely resonates with the “current state of things” (or has that always been the case since Time Immemorial?). Charles has delivered another elegantly descriptive analysis of an equally pertinent song. Contemporaneously, there definitely seems to be more & more “nothing to see here” going around. And, unfortunately, many of these nefarious characters are succeeding at their ruse.

A lot of amazing personification and metaphor in this review, well done CC. I find it interesting that often the same people that say that people need to “wake up” and “do your research” are getting fed lines, albeit not standard ones (which makes them more enticing I guess), themselves.

This song has an immediate force in that drum beat and then the voice with a lot of intention in its lyrics, immediately filling the atmosphere with rock energy but with a mysterious touch in its harmonies and dynamics that are somewhat surprising, as is its ending that remains as if leaving space for a continuation.

What a review! ๐Ÿ‘ I love how it captures not just the sound but the intent behind Nothing To See Here. Music should provoke thought as much as it moves the heart, and Gary (Unobliterated) does exactly that. The blend of urgency, atmosphere, and lyrical honesty makes this track stand out. It is definitely true, “ignorance is bliss”. Somehow, when I was a young man, I was working something like 12 hours a day, skilled but manual work, learning life through experiences, digesting daily news through co-workers, customers, the radio, or a newspaper lying around wherever I was working or while I spent time off chilling out with a refreshing beer in the evenings, or a regenerating early morning coffee. For me, at the time, that was the truth, instead it was only my own reality. Too many people live in a routine that don’t allow them to see. I really feel this song, which, in conjunction with the above article made me think, and that is what true art should do; so, mission accomplished, now, I can see something :P. Show Less
