Welcome all to ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐˜†โ€™๐˜€ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, a series of weekly reviews by Charles Connolly – an artist in his own right. Here, Charles delves into the greatest brand new singles brought to you by the best unsigned artists on our electrifying and eclectic set of

Charles is in a similar boatโ€ฆ

Who remembers a British band from the 90s called Republica? Those who do, whatโ€™s the song that springs to mindโ€ฆ? Is it โ€œReady to Goโ€? Hereโ€™s the chorus: โ€œIt’s a crack, I’m back, yeah I’m standing on the rooftops shouting out. Baby, I’m ready to goโ€. Thatโ€™s me right now. Iโ€™m standing on the rooftops shouting out. Baby, Iโ€™m ready to go! Yep, itโ€™s that time of the week where I please some and bore others. Woo-hoo! Iโ€™m ready to go. Not ready to leave, you understand. Ach, and some of you got your hopes up. Well, tough. Baby, Iโ€™m ready to stay. But despite my hoarse vocal cords from that echoing decibelage, Iโ€™m wondering if Iโ€™m being acknowledged, or even noticedโ€ฆ Every week I write about this or that, and sometimes even the other. But I wonder, if I were to copy and paste a great big chunk of the Oxford English Dictionary instead, how many would actually noticeโ€ฆ? Would the comments still read โ€œgood song good review keep up the good work cant wait for the next one emoticon emoticonโ€? Possibly. Probably. Definitely. The internetโ€™s a funny place, after all. I wonโ€™t be copying a chunk of the Oxford English Dictionary, though, as Iโ€™m not a fan of alphabet soup. These pieces go out to potentially every single living person on this Earth. The same goes for our musicโ€ฆ Every single person can read these peculiar articles of mine for free. Every single person can listen to our music for free. Yet, most do not. I canโ€™t understand why. Is it all terrible? Is it really all that bad?? Of course not. The real reason is that nobody knows. But the more important reason is that nobody cares. Why WOULD you?? Some random bloke on the internet writes about music and other random junk. Some unknown artist releases yet another song. Pah.

We all scream and shout from time to time. Well, the humans among us do. The rather more sedate types type strongly worded letters. Or they write in their diary because their therapist has told them itโ€™s good to do so. The book of honest sighs, read by no one. But that book is at least SUPPOSED to be private. Shouting is not. Neither is a strongly worded letter. The point is, nobodyโ€™s listening. Figuratively or not, theyโ€™ve got their noise-cancelling headphones on. To them, you are noise. Are you picketing? Well, with so many pickets going on these days, you become just another picketing nuisance. We have learnt to drown it out. Imagine you are vehemently against something, so you shout. Nobodyโ€™s listening. You migrate to the World Wide Web to do the same. Your post gets one like, from the weird stalker who likes every single one of your posts, no matter what itโ€™s about. Even the stalkerโ€™s not actually listening. But eventually, through your persistence, someone will latch on. Even that one personโ€™s acknowledgement makes it all worthwhile. We canโ€™t all be world-changing entrepreneurs whose words on which everyoneโ€™s attention hangs. Thank God! I write these articles for the few who genuinely enjoy them, for the artist reviewed, and for myself – my own little book of honest sighs, albeit a rather more public one. And this is the very reason we should keep going with the music. So many artists are disheartened by the lack of enthusiasm surrounding their work and themselves as artists. They feel lost in a sea of artists in a similar boat – which they are. It is hard work being no one. Putting every ounce of effort into something that most will not ever listen to. It can cause one to lower oneโ€™s standards or even stop entirely. But donโ€™t. If anything, this should push you to hit the highest standards you can – even with help from others. To keep going until you cease to be. Note: the highest standards. It is not about quantity. Please donโ€™t just churn out regular muck.

I was recently suggested – by an artist I admire – to perhaps go softer on my articles in terms of quality and quantity, so it wouldnโ€™t take up so much of my time (these things take a while). Besides, who actually listens to what I have to say? Nobodyโ€ฆ? Although I did actually listen to this suggestion, I didnโ€™t take the advice. I donโ€™t see the point in a job half done. The few who do appreciate these articles are genuine fans. They donโ€™t say nice things for โ€œsupportโ€ or to pat me on the back. They know Iโ€™m not interested in that. Although it would be nice if each reviewed artist actually sent me a message of thanksโ€ฆ Those few Corner enjoyers should not be let down or disappointed. Thereโ€™s so much dross on the internet. So much auto-generate. So much clickbait. I donโ€™t do that stuff. And sure, like our music, for the most part, nobodyโ€™s listening. But the relative few who ARE listening, why not give them something goodโ€ฆ? Thankfully, this community is not like most of the rest of the world. It is a rare kind that listens. Which is exactly what I did – listened. Itโ€™s what I do every week. I listen to every single new release I can find. How else could I possibly pick my weekly fave if I havenโ€™t given everyone the chance? The dross doesnโ€™t play for long. Neither does the HAL (A.I.). God, the HAL stuff still goes on. Even from those who publicly said theyโ€™d LOVE to have โ€œtheirโ€ music played and sung by real musicians. Still waitingโ€ฆ But HAL users, please donโ€™t bother getting real musicians – the song was still written by a machine. Tell me, HAL users, what would be YOUR part in the projectโ€ฆ? You pressed upload?? God, I despise it so much. You know why I feel free to rant and rave? Because nobodyโ€™s listening. Ha-HAH! I came THIS close to naming those fraudsters, but ya know what? Maybe SOMEone is listeningโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m HOPING someone is listening, because Iโ€™ve got something for you to listen to. This artist is as far away from me as possible, and yet I can still hear somethingโ€ฆ Please welcome Avresa with their brand new single, Nobodyโ€™s Listening. I always wonder about when I say โ€œPlease welcomeโ€ฆโ€ – Do you applaud? Do you let out a little โ€œWhoop!!โ€? Do you nod in acknowledgement? I imagine Jane Marie to applaud (sheโ€™s polite like that). I imagine Bernice Marsala to let out a little whoop (sheโ€™s silly like that). I imagine Dom Piper to nod in acknowledgement (heโ€™sโ€ฆ a right Piper). So what does Avresa actually mean? Well, itโ€™s Swedish for departure. Okay. But why? Well, it was to signify a change in musical doings. Avresa is, in fact, one man. This one man was in a 4-piece band for many years, and this was to be his solo project thereafter. Hence the โ€œdepartureโ€. Something NEW! In picking this Swedish word, he must therefore be Swedish, then. Mmmโ€ฆ Nope. Not with a name like Jeremy Binger! Heโ€™s Australian. Sydney, to be precise. So why the Swedish word?? The answer is: Why ever not! Nobodyโ€™s Listening is something of which Jeremy is rather proud, and I can see why. Hear why. Itโ€™s huge! I was absolutely convinced that this was a live rock band playing together. As is often the case: I was wrong.

Despite nobody listening, I feel it my duty to MAKE you listen. Just so much music out there and you need someone to turn to. Someone to guide you. While Iโ€™m certainly no life coach, I should be able to show you the whereabouts of some damned good music. One such example being Nobodyโ€™s Listening. Oh, the irony of having everyone listen to Nobodyโ€™s Listening. And you really should listen. Not just for โ€œsupportโ€ in that mandatory pat on the back to which so many have become accustomed that they have developed a cough. It is for YOU! It is a free gift for YOU, you selfish blighter. You canโ€™t scold me for insulting you, because nobodyโ€™s listening. Not even you. Such is the freedom of having not one listener. Hah! Okay, Iโ€™d really better stop this. There is a slight chance that someone IS actually listeningโ€ฆ And so to the music and such. Avresa is not common knowledge in the New Artist Spotlight, methinks. In fact I would be surprised if many of you have even noticed the name, you observant bunch. Yet Jeremy has quietly been in the NAS for around 3 and a half years, on and off. Which proves his point: nobodyโ€™s listening! When the talent just isnโ€™t there, I donโ€™t feel too bad for the quieter ones remaining relative unknowns. But when someone as talented as Jeremy Binger comes along, itโ€™s simply a crying shame to have them be so obscure. Letโ€™s shine a light and listen up!

Still with me? Were you ever? Start listening, for gawdโ€™s sake. Itโ€™s time you finally pressed play. Has your left ear stopped workingโ€ฆ? Donโ€™t worry, itโ€™ll come back soon. We just need a little right ear affair before the full-on orgy from both sides. Lo-fi punky riffs knock your right ear as if to ask if anyoneโ€™s at home. You gingerly open the door and all Hell breaks loose! Instant chaotic house party! This has the dig of Queens of the Stone Age with the girth of Elbowโ€™s newfound mature era in rock. Riffs galore! Itโ€™s not long before the voice is in town and the lows are among us. As soon as I heard the vocal, I recognised it. Or I THOUGHT I recognised it. There a band I love that nobodyโ€™s listening to. Theyโ€™re called Shame. Thereโ€™s something loose and volatile about them. Especially in the way that Charlie Steen sings. It is THIS aspect of which Jeremyโ€™s vocal reminds me. That punk ethic. That โ€œI donโ€™t take no shit from nobodyโ€ attitude. But there is no HINT of Australian in his accent. He sounds entirely British to me. Yes, Americans, there is a clear distinction between Australian and English accents. I never understood why The Simpsons usually portrayed English people as Australianโ€ฆ But letโ€™s get back on track. Those drums!! Such rolling energy in 360 degree Technicolor! Itโ€™s grittier than a London pothole. Jeremyโ€™s staccato vocal phrasing only adds to the energy while retaining a proper melody. This fabulous song could so easily fall to pieces with poor timing. Despite the turbulent nature of the song, Jeremy is locked in with Jeremy. Timing is something that SO often lets down many songs these days. Organic is not a synonym for sloppy. Donโ€™t hide behind your sloppy organs. Jeremy can manage it even with his organs on show – his heart is dangling off the mic stand while he rips up the joint. He also understands the importance of dynamics – not just in terms of volume. His production snakes through thick and thin. And boy, does he know about syncopation! Iโ€™d explain what it is, but nobodyโ€™s listening. When you ARE listening, though (I know you will be), Iโ€™d advise headphones. Heed Jeremyโ€™s final plea: โ€œWe need desperately to listenโ€.

Nobodyโ€™s listening – la la la! Okay – Baby, Iโ€™m ready to go.

Always listening and reading, Charles! Your reviews are a Tuesday evening tradition for me, and have been since I joined NAS 3 years ago. Such a fantastic way to discover new music and discover newness about the music I’m listening to from the NAS community. Thank you! Don’t ever change! Love this edgy rock track and the cover art is fantastic too!

Charles, you’ve absolutely nailed it again with this review of Avresa’s “Nobody’s Listening”! The irony of writing so passionately about a song lamenting that no one listens is brilliant. Your comparison to Shame and Queens of the Stone Age gives me a perfect sonic reference point, and I love how you highlighted Jeremy’s British-sounding vocals despite his Australian roots. Your dedication to quality over quick content is exactly what makes Connolly’s Corner special – you’re one of the few truly listening in this noisy digital world. Keep championing these hidden gems like Jeremy Binger – this review makes me want to put on headphones and experience every syncopated beat and staccato vocal phrase you described!

Well, this song really dovetails nicely into the theme of your review and what we’re all doing here…wanting to be heard! And wonderfully this community actually listens. Despite you disparaging thoughts, I quite look forward to your reviews and the spotlighting of someoneโ€™s work. This song is brimming with unbridled energy and punky attitude. Itโ€™s executed in a dynamic manner top to bottom and kicks hard when it needs to. Iโ€™m digging it a lot on each listen!

This one really hit. Definitely tough as an independent artist to feel like you’re screaming into the void. And yes sometimes it’s like, why bother when people are just making AI everything these days. But honestly I think we can smell our own. Not quite a turing test but oh well. If your heart is in what is you do, keep doing it. I think that’s the only compass we have, when it comes to art. And anyways, screaming into the void is better than no scream at all. (Plus screaming can be fun)

Hi Charles. I love reading your reviews. And I also love listening to the music you review. Making a song and publishing it is a difficult process and everyone who goes public with their work is amazing and few get the awards that make up for it. I think there is no general limit that will bring enough feeling that someone is listening. That it is about that feeling, sharing your work, a part of yourself. I don’t have many listeners, but when I realize that every day someone in the world spends time with my music, it seems incredible to me.

Your review is certainly a highlight amongst all the things that I read weekly. I own an Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English from 1988 – no “internet”, no “social media”, or anything like that. ๐Ÿ˜ The German word for Avresa would be very probably Abreise, so it’s quite similar. The song is awesome. I love the changes in it and on the vocals (clean/distorted).

Good pick Charles! As a 90’s kid I immediately can relate to the sound of Avresa. Went to do some searching, I found out he is a true guitar guy, you know, with pedals en gear ‘n stuff. Dig his sound a lot, also the cry out: Nobody’s Listening. I believe that is also part of the that special sound, the need to be heard, the urge and longing. 90’s kids have to be even louder this time. Scrolling his Instagram reminds me of my own, you found another musical brother within NAS. I have listened to Avresa before inside of NAS, as I usually hunt for the rock, metal and punk bands inside the eclectic community. Had not listened to “Nobody’s Listening” yet, just did and it is fantastic. Definitely get the QOTSA vibes, never heard of Elbow, but will check them out as well. Charles, you are one of the rarest of the human species, you invite the unfamiliar into your life every week. Most do not. As unknown artists, we all bemoan the fact that it is so hard to get the great unwashed to listen to our music, (Cally and I struggle to get our own families to listen to our music!). Yet, how many of us do as you do and invite so much new music into our lives? Most of us constantly listen to our favourite artists, often harking back to the days when our knees didnโ€™t hurt. As members of NAS we are exposed to more new music than most, This is why your excellent reviews are so valuableโ€ฆ Show More

My first band supported Republica at Leeds University on September 25th, 1998! Frustratingly I can’t find a link to prove it, so you’ll have to take my word for it. It was terrifyingly nerve racking playing in front of about 2000 people. It was one of the high points in our short ‘career’, though. Weird, I’ve only just noticed that there are two comment boxes. One at the top of the comments section and another one at the end. The guitars in this track are nice and chunky. The way the chords give way to muted harmonics in the chorus made me think of Placebo, another member of the 90’s ‘Britpop’ (ugh, that word) alumni.

The raw punk inspired guitars and overall vibe are a refreshing escape from today’s music with a bit of nostalgic introspection.

Avresa’s song and this article remind us how fulfilling it is to ourselves and others when we actually do listen. Thank you for writing this article, Charles, you helped open up my mind a bit more. Thank you Charles for putting together this incredible article. I’m truly honoured that you selected my track with the huge amount of talent that’s in NAS! It’s clear how much time, effort and thought you invested into writing this. It’s why your articles are so valued by those who are lucky enough to discover them. They are a rare gem amongst the dross of the internet ๐Ÿ˜œ Thanks also not only for listening and featuring the track, but for really diving deep into the headspace which inspired me to write it. Through your great humour, you’ve generated more discussion about these themes which were so important to me – shouting into the void and the broader implications for where society is heading. You said it so eloquently: “Figuratively or not, theyโ€™ve got their noise-cancelling headphones on” and “we can’t all be world-changing entrepreneurs whose words on which everyone’s attention hangs.” There’s comfort in knowing the disheartened feeling from being in the minority, or being the noise is shared no matter which side of the globe you’re on. Speaking of which I actually didn’t realise how British my accent sounded. Haha, that really was not deliberate at all! It’s probably quite easy to spot the influence Britpop has had on my songwriting though, so I guess that’s what felt ‘right’ to me. Thanks also to everyone who’s landed here, read this far and left a comment on the track. This is more genuine listeners I dreamed it would have so thank you! It means so much to me! ๐Ÿ™ Show Less

I think this article might lose attention thanks to Trumpy’s JFK disclosures being released. Proof that somebody, and nobody, is listening. Hmmm ๐Ÿค”

Iโ€™m always listening Charles! I love your reviews including your stories/ insights at the beginning! I agree itโ€™s easy to get downhearted when thereโ€™s such a volume of music now and can be hard to cut through and feel heard but thatโ€™s why we make music for us and not everyone else! ๐Ÿ˜Š Really enjoyed this track great energy and attitude! ๐Ÿค˜

Isn’t that the problem with almsot everything these days, we are bombarded with infromation on the net, the new, the papers, most of it is utter rubbish and su drives us all nuts! As musicians we pour our heart and soul into our music and post it all over the place to get a few miserable thumbs up! Thanks for spotlighting a fellow Sydney based band. I will try to get to see them if tehy are playing around. Cracking song too!

I do do a lot of โ€œwhooping,โ€ donโ€™t I? ๐Ÿ˜‚ The benefit to being an artist that does music out of passion is that most (if not all) of us would keep doing our thing whether anybodyโ€™s listening or not. BUT thatโ€™s what makes reviews like these so important – it points the ears that WANT to listen toward a song they may not have discovered otherwise. I didnโ€™t get through my whole release radar this week (for obvious reasons ๐Ÿ˜ด๐Ÿ˜…), but I did check out this track because of the article and listened a few times. Awesome punk rock energy! ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿป

This is my kind of track! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ Great review Charles – we appreciate your commitment to “a job fully done”. Can’t put my finger on exactly why, but I especially enjoyed the read this week [as in, more than the usual enjoyment]

I love the extreme stereophony used in the first stereo songs. The instruments are well balanced left and right and the timbre of the voice lends itself to this type of music. Congratulations Avresa.

Thank you DJ Time! Much thought was put behind what was going on in the left vs. right, so I’m glad you noticed! Cheers.

Just discovered “Nobody’s Listening” by Avresa, thanks to ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐˜†โ€™๐˜€ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ fantastic review! This track is a powerful blend of lo-fi punk riffs and mature rock energy. Avresa’s talent shines through with chaotic yet controlled vocals and impressive production. A must-listen for rock enthusiasts. Grateful for the spotlight on this hidden gem! ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŽค

The artwork is reminiscent of Joy Division, but the music has a lot more energy (and less existential dread). Nice release!

I listened to it on headphones and it has a nice sound. The effects used for the guitars are nice. It has a nice musicality and they are very good. It was a pleasure listening to you Avresa

As CC reviews seem to almost follow a Stream of Consciousness jumping from one observation to another curio, the song introduces a raw punk guitar vibe, but then transforms into something quite different with lush and melodic choruses. Expect the unexpected and pay attention to this great song and review.

    Last Ravage Opinion

People have no time in their busy, everyday life for anything else rather than following a trend, viral post or video, just because that is what everybody else is talking about at the moment, and it is effortlessly entertaining. But when CC, Aversa or myself publish something new, I’m sure that SOMEone will be listening too, in my little corner I’m listening, especially if I find something that makes sense in this predominantly desensitised society, I look further into and build my own unbiased ideas around it. I know, you may think I’m wrong, you are free to have you own opinion, I have the freedom to have mine, at least for now I do have. I listened to ‘Nobody’s Listening’ and I will listen again and again ’cause I enjoy it! Show Less

Nobodyโ€™s Listening is a great song. So sad but true. Everyone seems so overwhelmed by lots of noise these days that they tune out to hearing. So whatโ€™s the solution? Thank you Sir Charles Connolly for that great review highlighting this top notch artist, Avresa!
