The NAS 10 Questions

In this week’s 10 Questions we get to know Denyx, a singer-songwriter from Finland.

Their song ‘Simply Fantasy‘ is currently featured on the NAS Spotify playlists

You can follow Denyx on YouTube

1. Tell us a little about where you are from

Croatia, currently living in Finland, newly retired and I am currently composing for my pleasure and because I love music!

2. What inspired Denyx to start playing and making music?

Jimi Hendrix inspired me when I first heard him play, a long time ago. Later I was listening to Grand Funk Railroad, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. I continued listening to rock for a few years until I heard about the Colosseum band which leaned towards Jazz/Blues style. Then I changed my listening, which led through Billy Cobham and Chick Corea to Mezzoforte, who plays, among other things, the most jazz/funk style that I still listen to today!

3. Who are Denyx’s biggest musical influences?

First through listening to the Colosseum band and later the Koinonia band and as I mentioned before Mezzoforte I formed my own style that is closest to my heart and that’s a mix of Jazz and Funk!

4. What are your goals in the music industry or as an artist?

I think I’m too old to have big ambitions for a career, so now I just work out of pleasure and love.

5. Tell us about your creative process

I get inspiration from listening to today’s new bands, of which there are many and very, very good ones.

6. What is your all-time favorite song by another artist and why?

Stevie Wonder cover Chick Corea’s song Spain.

7. What is the best advice you have either given or received in terms of music?

My best advice given is that ”you should always have a goal to work towards and never give up if that’s what you love”.

And the best advice received was that you are worth as many people as the languages you speak.

8. What is your proudest accomplishment?

I am proud of my professional music career, working with several cover bands throughout Europe (here I will mention only a few countries: Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Finland, and I was also in the studio) as a drummer. and today 250,000 streams on Spotify with the my song “Simply Fantasy”

9. What’s been your most embarrassing moment so far?

My first performance on a cruise ship between Sweden and Finland was during some unstable weather with pretty big waves. The show must go on, but I was close to throwing up and had a lump in my throat but I had to keep playing.. ugh that was something!

10. Tell us about your lowest and highest points in music so far.

In my musical career, the lowest point was at the very beginning. A gig with a band using old drums and a home-painted guitar. The brightest point in my career is what I already mentioned before – my song reaching 250,000 streams on Spotify.

Great to learn more about Denyx and I can really relate to his influences and love of Jazz and Funk. He mentioned Mezzoforte, a band I’ve long admired! He’s had a longstanding relationship with music and obviously continues to grow in his journey. I wish him all the best 😎

Our inspirations for playing music are very similar! When you grow up listening to that kind of music, you can’t help but to want to play and create something!

I listened to β€œSimply Fantasy.” The urban vibe and guitar playing, especially the melody and tone, felt so good and put me in the best mood. Thank you! I’ll listen to your other songs next.

Haha yes the waves between Sweden and Finland could be tough during fall and wintertime. Great to know a little about you, would be even more fantastic to learn even a little bit more… Great to hear that you play the drums, feels like there could be an opening for collaborations within NAS.

The show must go on even when your not up to it. That must have been awful but you made it through.

Terry Gilbey Dec 11, 2025 Congratulations on reaching 250k streams on your track, that is a big achievement. Having read about your ordeal on the cruise ship that is something I will certainly steer clear of (not that I can see any cruise ship being interested in my sort of music).
