The NAS 10 Questions

This time on The 10 Questions we get to know Broselle + Naysh, an electro-acoustic duo from Canada. Brett (broselle) is the lead singer, songwriter, and does the acoustic guitar parts. Ryan (naysh) is on electric guitars, backing vocals, production/editing, and all the other parts heard within the songs.

The track “Midnight Air” is featured in the New Artist Spotlight Family of Playlists.

1. Tell us a little about where you are from and what you are currently doing.

We both met in Calgary, Canada where we’ve lived for the majority of our lives. Brett has since moved just outside of Vancouver where he works in audio production and sales. While I (Ryan) remain in Calgary teaching guitar full time. Because we’re in different cities, all of the music we create together as “broselle + naysh” is done virtually where we’re always sending song ideas back and forth.

2. What inspired you to start playing and making music?

We met in university where we were both doing our undergraduate degrees in classical guitar. One day at school, we were practicing some duets and then we decided to jam some non-classical stuff that we’d each written. This eventually led to us forming a band and writing numerous songs together. While we still like to go back and dabble in the classical world every so often, our hearts have always been invested in creating our own music.

𝟯. Who are your biggest influences?

We both have an extremely diverse taste in music. It might not reflect in the chill electro-acoustic vibes we try to create with our songs, but we’re actually huge metal fans. We do try to incorporate bits and pieces of different genres in our tunes, so there really isn’t much that doesn’t have an influence on us.

4. What are your goals in the music industry?

All we ever wanted from the start was to just put our music out there in the wild as a creative outlet. We’ve never been in it for any sort of fame or financial success. Quite frankly, we’re happy if our music is enjoyed by just one person.

5. Tell us about your creative process when you make new music.

Our process is very difficult seeing as we don’t live in the same city. Thankfully, we have a very good understanding of each other’s tendencies from our time studying classical guitar and being in a few other bands together. Usually Brett will send an idea for a song and then I’ll write lead/accompanying parts and then send them back. Brett will then do vocals once all the instrumentation is done and then I’ll work on the editing until it’s all finished. Even though it’s a drawn out process, we always love hearing what the other person responds with as we’re stitching all the pieces together. One day we hope to reunite and actually be in the same room again when we write a song!

6. What is your all-time favorite song?

“Time In A Bottle” by Jim Croce will always have a special meaning to me as it was my wife’s and my wedding song. I asked Brett what his favorite song was but he didn’t get back to me in time so I’m gonna go with “Laid To Rest” by Lamb of God. Might not be his favorite song, but I don’t think he’ll disapprove.

7. What is the best advice you have either given or received in terms of music?

A bit of a cheeky answer here (seeing as we’ve both spent a lot of time as guitar teachers), but probably the best advice we’ve ever given to anybody studying music is to not be afraid to slow the eff down. Note: we’ve also been on the receiving end of that same advice several times.

8. Proudest accomplishment?

Honestly, we’re both proud that we’ve found a way to continue making music together despite the challenges of living in different time zones. It could’ve been easy enough to call it quits because of the logistics, but we’re glad we persevered and we are excited to share lots of new music with everyone.

9. Just for fun! What’s been your most embarrassing moment so far?

Not embarrassing for either of us, but we still were a part of it. We were playing in a concert for our guitar ensemble in university and one of the members immediately threw up onstage once the group began playing. Understandably, the person ran offstage, dropped their guitar, and we had to finish the show with a pile of vomit on the ground beside us. It wasn’t easy to concentrate, but we got the job done.

𝟭0. Tell us about your lowest and highest points in music so far.

Until recently, we were actually on a very lengthy stretch of not playing music together. We had so many songs we’d previously written that were just collecting dust and we thought they were destined to fade away and never be heard. That was a tough time for the two of us and there were periods where we thought our musical journey had come to an end. However, we are now back at it and motivated as ever. We have a significant amount of material that we’ve recorded and we’re in the process of getting all of it out there. The feeling of having the creativity rolling again is a very high point musically for the two of us.

I love your diversity in influences! Which of your songs most captures that diversity by either blending a genre or two, or blending various vibes? I want to hear it. Cheers!

Oh wow, I’m always impressed when people don’t live in the same place, but still manage to collaborate. Good job. Also, I can relate to the being influenced by a range of Genres. Before I became the singer for my band, I used to drum in a metal band and we covered ‘Laid To Rest’. What a song. I just saw Lamb of God at Knotfest in Melbourne a few months ago and have seen them a few other times when they have come to Australia 🙂 Has Brett had a chance to see them live? It’s a treat.

such an inspiring duo! I wonder if they always are motivated and inspiring and inspired. I sometimes lose my motivation and reading stories like this motivates me for a week. I’m glad I have NAS as a source of motivation. When things don’t work much and you see you’re on the same boat as 1000 other people, you feel you belong and it doesn’t matter and you keep going. It’s worthy of note to know that you are both far away from each other and yet doing well musically. It’s a good thing to be grateful for. I have a producer friend who we both do music together but we hardly find time to do music together despite being close to each other. This is truly motivating and inspirational to me. Keep it up. Your music will surely be heard.
