    Charles listens to his friendsโ€ฆ

Lowness is a common feeling these days, it seems. Okay, it doesnโ€™t โ€œseemโ€, it IS. But how is this any different from the past? Weโ€™ve always had low times. Weโ€™re human, after all. Up, down, up, down, upโ€ฆ down. Like a yo-yo that eventually loses its impetus to rise. The difference between the lows of then and the lows of now is that the lows used to be slotted in between the highs, whereas now I donโ€™t see too many people talking about the highsโ€ฆ But the main thing Iโ€™ve noticed is how this general lowness seems to cover the full age spectrum from young to โ€œhow are you still going??โ€. I donโ€™t know of this ever happening before. And it ainโ€™t good. So, what are we to do? You could try to distract yourself with brief nonsenseโ€ฆ You could maybe analyse whatโ€™s wrong and attempt to put it rightโ€ฆ You could see a therapistโ€ฆ These are all fair ways of sorting the matter. But sometimes itโ€™s just a case of riding it out. Where there isnโ€™t a great deal one can really do, but wait for things to get better. I suppose Iโ€™m more talking about sadness rather than lowness. While you wait for time to pass, you might as well use this overflowing emotion and get something out of itโ€ฆ

I have spoken several times about music being a healer. It is so much more than a distraction. It can weave itself into our genes and become a part of us. We all feel, but none so much as an artist. Artists tend to feel everything in overdrive. Something good is something great. Something bad is something horrific. Something happy is something exciting. Something sad is something mortifying. Passion and emotion are turned up to eleven. A โ€œnormalโ€ person (not an artist) can put on some music in a vague attempt to distract or soothe. It ends up as background sound or something to hum to. An artist can place the needle within the groove and find something rather different. It is far from background sound. The artist is not hearing it, but listening to it. The music is absorbed into the bloodstream, and the artistโ€™s soul has a partner with which to dance, feel and cry. There is such beauty in sadness, but it must be properly honed in order to be beautiful. Otherwise itโ€™s just depressing. Basically, music stops things from simply being a bit shit.

But although I have mentioned this thing about music being a healer many times before, this time itโ€™s a bit different. Because Iโ€™m not talking about music in general; Iโ€™m talking about specific songs. Now youโ€™re waiting for me to tell you which magic songs those are. Itโ€™s not quite like that, however, because these special songs are different for everyone. If youโ€™ve lived a little life of music, then youโ€™ll know that there are just a few very important songs for you. This isnโ€™t necessarily your favourite songs. For example, the song that joins ME in the hardest moments, I have not heard in years. Itโ€™s not even a brilliant song. But it helps me. It moves me. It moves WITH me. It has been a close friend of decades, but a friend I donโ€™t โ€œseeโ€ often. And that song ISโ€ฆโ€ฆ Nah, youโ€™re not interested in knowing that, so letโ€™s move on. But you see, songs are genuinely like friends to me. You know how your closest friends can not only make you feel better, but can mourn and weep with you? Well, thatโ€™s what these few SPECIAL songs are for me: my friends. Sad, innit. Think about it, though. That song is not ever going to be too busy to help, you can summon it in seconds, and it will never let you down. Itโ€™s the perfect friend! โ€œIโ€™ll be there for you, cos youโ€™re there for me tooโ€ – Friends. And I am, always there for it, but it never seems to need anything from me, except my ears.

It seems as though Patrik Ahlm – who may or may not have appeared here once or twice before – has similar feelings about certain songs by certain artists. Patrik Ahlm, the sweetest Swede, has put this idea to music in his latest release, โ€˜Until The Tears Have Driedโ€™. Itโ€™s such an excellent, clever observation, that until the tears have dried, we have โ€œthe one song we can fall back onโ€. Oh sorry, this is the bit where Iโ€™m supposed to tell you all about the artistโ€ฆ Well, you all know him well, or rather, his music. For heโ€™s a jolly good fellow, โ€œand so say all of usโ€/โ€œwhich nobody can denyโ€ (depending on whether youโ€™re familiar with the British or the American version). But he is, a jolly good fellow. Very lovely, very caring and very kind. But more importantly to us, heโ€™s the fabbest music man. I say โ€œmusic manโ€ loosely because he does it all; the writing, the arranging, the producing, the playing, the programming, the singing, the mixing and the mastering. To me, thatโ€™s a music man. But Iโ€™m not impressed by the list, Iโ€™m impressed by the quality. I must admit I didnโ€™t adore his last single (rare for me); but the good news is, I was evidently in the minority. โ€˜Sandstormโ€™ was possibly his biggest hit of the last year, certainly in terms of the New Artist Spotlight Top 20 chart. So what does it matter what EYE thinkโ€ฆ? This new song of his, though, I feel like he is right back on track with what he does best. Smooth, slick pop with a heck of a lot of heart.

Back to the song. Verse one mentions Bowie. Verse two mentions Janis Joplin. Chorus one blows us away. Verse three mentions R.E.M.. Chorus two hits even harder. The bridge reinforces the songโ€™s passionate point. Chorus three has you singing along, sure of the fact that your voice is as good as that of John Legend. Fade to completion. Yes, an actual fade. Come on, itโ€™s 2026: isnโ€™t it about time we brought back the fade-out?! Iโ€™m rather bored of those sudden stops at the end of most songs in the last couple of decades. That abrupt halt so often emphasising the cheapness of a production; as if the loop has naturally stopped at the end of the bar, and therefore there is no more. Fading out is so much more musical, anthemic, sophisticated, and gives the whole piece a grand, lasting quality. Lord, I canโ€™t remember the last time EYE used a fade-out. Must do it. Anyway: Bowie, Joplin, R.E.Mโ€ฆ. These mentions are brief, yet key moments in the song. They are simply examples of what COULD BE the artists behind those songs that mean so much to you. They wouldnโ€™t be MY choices, but they might well be YOURS. And Iโ€™m sure they veer more towards Patrikโ€™s choices. Again, these have little to do with โ€œfavouriteโ€ songs, but instead the ones that hold you in times of trouble.

I have had this ultimate honour a few times, where people have told me that when theyโ€™re in a certain mood, nothing but a certain song of mine fits better. And whatโ€™s even more surprising is that itโ€™s not always the same song. The first time someone told me this, I was absolutely bowled over. I simply couldnโ€™t believe that a song I had written (โ€˜If You Wouldโ€™, unreleased) could have this effect on anyone. And I have a strong feeling that โ€˜Until The Tears Have Driedโ€™ could become that very special song for several. Not just because of the words, but also everything else it has to offer. The luring synths pulsing through oneโ€™s veins? The close, personal nature of Patrikโ€™s dry voice? The sporadic heart-jolting percussion that catches you off guard? The heart-melting melodies that make your tears hot? The exquisitely placed polite piano that drifts above like clouds of safety? Or maybe itโ€™s simply the anticipation of that chorus with its loud, rich, airy harmonies that have you on your knees as you pound the carpet with your fists, and your tears and drool get together to form a soggy puddle – the carpet darkens but you continue to sing alongโ€ฆ? Whatever it is, this is more than a song. It is an important part of someoneโ€™s life. Patrik Ahlm is more than a man. He is an artist.

If youโ€™re willing to share, Iโ€™d love to hear which song is YOUR friend. Mine isโ€ฆ Nah, youโ€™re not interested.

If youโ€™re planning to cry into the carpet, make sure to initially remove all traces of eyeliner and mascara, or that song will be an ex-friend.

Charles keeps it in the familyโ€ฆ

In a world of constant change, this time of year is one of standing still. I mean, we are probably frantically moving around like lunatics more so than any other time of year, but the time itself is pretty much unchanging. It is a time of tradition, and a time of family. A time of doing what we do, and in a way that we know how to do it. โ€œItโ€™s what weโ€™ve always doneโ€, springs to mind. Which is a far cry from every other side of life these days. Everything seems unknown now. The future looks more unknown than ever before. And so, December brings a vital grounding; a bond with our past. It truly is a festive month. Easter is a nice meal and a brief few hours of relaxation and chocolate stuffing, but Christmas is far more than just one day. December is a dark month full of light. Or full of LIGHTS, I should say. They twinkle in that fond way. The way they always used to twinkle. Even those blinding cold white LED lights of a few years ago have been replaced with a warmer hue; something that evokes the festive times we remember. Basically, as the modern world keeps getting more modern, there is kickback. We donโ€™t all want it. And as those โ€œgood old daysโ€ seep from Technicolor into sepia, we crave it more. We want that feeling of โ€œItโ€™s what weโ€™ve always doneโ€.

    Charles is off the scaleโ€ฆ

What is the ultimate test? A driving test? An IQ test? Joining Mensa? The Sunday Times Cryptic Crossword? That riddle you were once told by a schoolteacher whose only goal was to baffle and impress with wisdom from The Little Book of Brain? That very riddle that still haunts you throughout the months, years and decades to followโ€ฆ? Well, all these could be considered the ultimate test, depending on how high/far youโ€™re willing to go. If you think about it, weโ€™re tested all the time. With every choice you take, with every move you make (Iโ€™ll be watching you), you are always being tested. Despite not being remotely religious, I believe the ultimate test to be life itself. There is no manual, we are all different, and there is no right or wrong way of doing it. BUTโ€ฆ!! There is always a feeling of what is better or what is worse (if you arenโ€™t a complete psychopath). There is a general way of doing life, to which most of us adhere. It is tried and tested. But with every situation, each individual will act or react differently. Some love a gamble, while others fear even the idea of gambling. Some will stride into debt with the knowledge that they now have everything they want, while others will steer clear of that dreaded word, โ€œdebtโ€, making do with what they have. Some will think that half a second is long enough for a biscuit dunk in their beloved cup of tea, while others might not care if itโ€™s half a second or an entire minute; they will never dunk a biscuit and will only drink coffee. These are the things we must consider in life, and judge for ourselves.

    Charles heals from hurtโ€ฆ

โ€˜Autotelicโ€™ is not a word that comes up much in the average casual conversation. Or at least mine. Yours might very well be regularly punctuated with such a word. But with my personal simplistic conversing, the word is rarely to enter. In fact, I might say it has NEVER even popped by with so much as a โ€œremember me?โ€โ€ฆ But I think itโ€™s about time we started talking about it. Firstly, its meaning. โ€˜Autotelicโ€™ is usually referred to from an artistic standpoint. It means to make something for oneโ€™s own satisfaction. We have Greece to thank for the word; autos meaning self, and telos meaning goal. But while one could argue that ANYthing we do is autotelic, this is not quite right. If one is doing something for money, then the money is the reason. The DOING should be the reason if it is to be autotelic. Sometimes it might be both, of course; but unfortunately this is rarely the case. This is because most donโ€™t have the privilege of having their dream job. A dream job is when someone spends their working life doing exactly what they love doing, with the bonus of being paid for it. I say โ€œbonusโ€, but of course money is an absolute necessity in order to survive, and therefore not to be frowned upon.

    Charles loves to love loveโ€ฆ

Letโ€™s face it, I canโ€™t hide the fact that Iโ€™ve been a tad down in the dumps lately. And because of this, it might have brought down the mood these articles over the past few weeks. I canโ€™t help that, and I donโ€™t think thatโ€™s necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it shows how honest and genuine these things are. Butโ€ฆ You (the reader) might be more in the mood for something to bring you out of a similar slump, rather than have something to agree with and nod to. And so, here it is. Love. Love is the solver of all. Love is the only drug worth bothering with. Love changes everything. Love is what changes your mind. Love is what keeps you going. Love isโ€ฆ Ach, I just thoughtโ€ฆ This is really going to bring down the mood for those of you who havenโ€™t found โ€œthe oneโ€โ€ฆ But not to worry. Firstly, itโ€™ll give you something to look forward to. Secondly, there is more to love than your significant other. Or as some of you might say: INsignificant other. There is the love of a parent or two. There is the love of oneโ€™s child. There is the love of a grandparent. A sister, perhaps? There is the love of a pet. There is the love of your work and your passions. There is the love of life itselfโ€ฆ I feel very sorry for those of you who might have none of those. Those who just bled tears on your lap, please donโ€™t; the label says dry-clean only. Besides, I canโ€™t make everybody happy with my writingโ€ฆ

    Charles snaps the bestโ€ฆ

Those of you who never read my articles (which is fine) but for some reason pretend you do (which is not fine), make this one the one you actually read. But then again, those who don’t read them won’t read this, so that was pointless even to write. Moving on! Okay. So this review probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise to many of you. But I have a LOT to say. Before we get into the month of Christmas, it seems like a good time to look at the year that has little more than a twelfth left. Dwelling on gloom isn’t the best idea. Worldly speaking, it has certainly been an eventful year, what with one thing and another. There has of course been the usual tranche of celebrity deaths and ones closer to home too – but we said we wouldn’t be dwelling on the negative side of things. Let us look at the best of what has happened this year. Ummโ€ฆ Erโ€ฆ Okay, letโ€™s change that thought. Letโ€™s turn our attention to music. Yeah, that might be more uplifting. Howโ€™s about we look at the best albums of the yearโ€ฆ? Yes!! What a glorious feast of fun that will be! Ah, Iโ€™m already drooling over the prospect of such a musing.

    Charles toilsโ€ฆ

Iโ€™ve been listening to quite a lot of Motown records lately. That is, in between yet more plays of Amaury Laurent Bernierโ€™s masterpiece (I hope you have all been enjoying it too – air-guitaring to โ€˜Innit ?โ€™). All this Motown, though, and it always brings me back to the same song. โ€˜Workโ€™. โ€œWhat is it good for? Absolutely NOTHING!!โ€โ€ฆ Ah sorry, my mistake. That songโ€™s called โ€˜Warโ€™, not โ€˜Workโ€™. Oh, and while weโ€™re on the subject of getting the words wrong, that fabulous early Motown record, โ€˜My Girlโ€™ (you all know it); my girlfriend always sang that chorus as โ€˜Maggotsโ€™. โ€œTalkinโ€™ โ€˜bout maah-ggots. MAGGOTS! Ooh-ew-ew-ew!โ€โ€ฆ Itโ€™s enough to bring more than a smile to my face. But back to โ€˜Workโ€™. Sorry: โ€˜Warโ€™. The thing is, having been involved in few wars in my time, the switcheroo of war into work makes it more potent in a way. Because we all work. We all slave away at whatever it is that we do. And thereโ€™s that feeling of โ€œWhat are we DOING??โ€ – thank you, Lois from Malcolm in the Middle. What IS it good for? Absolutely nothing? Well, I believe it is good for two things (mainly). One (you guessed it): money. Two: a sense of purpose. It keeps us busy and gives us something to do. But more importantly it makes us feel like weโ€™ve earnt the good times. And I like that. There is however one vital flaw in this systemโ€ฆ In doing all this work all the time, we barely have any time for those โ€œgood timesโ€. It is indeed the law of the sod. But at least all that spondulicks is piling up in the account, right? Nah; the taxman will see to that. And so we go back to that sense of purpose. And that roof over our head. It pays the bills, and is therefore necessary.

Charles blooms and realises flower powerโ€ฆ

As the world gets increasingly machine-driven and automatic, one must occasionally “peace-out” and remind oneself of how it all started. In nature. Before a time when man realised that nature was a force to be reckoned with, and that – feeling the challenge – man would do its utmost to conquer and overthrow it. Luckily however, nature is unstoppable. The phrase “let nature take its course” conjures winding twine and vine grappling everything in its path, finding the shortest route to the finish line. Nothing will get in the way of this slender rope. I have recently finished watching the latest David Attenborough series: The Green Planet. Having adored almost everything he and his team have produced in the last 25 years, I was very much looking forward to this most recent wonder-series. For anyone unfamiliar with Attenborough (is there anyone?), he makes the natural world absolutely captivating and awe-inspiring to anyone who hasnโ€™t the slightest inclination towards that kind of thing. Simply put, the target audience is everyone in the world. Attenborough really is Mother Natureโ€™s Son. He has seemingly covered almost every existing living creature known to man – including some that he and his team have discovered for the first time. We have swum through seas and oceans. We have trekked through deserts and dunes. We have been scorched by the sun and drenched by the rain. We have travelled every corner of the globe (if the globe has corners). So what left was there to talk aboutโ€ฆ? Was there anything still uncoveredโ€ฆ? Well it turned out there was. Plants.
