This week, Brad (aka Mercury Teardrop) takes over

If you are the same vintage as me, you will likely remember back to those days in your late teens when your parents or caregivers departed for a holiday and you found yourself with the house or pad to yourself. For me, these circumstances always resulted in 24/7 music cranked, loud guitars, lots of jamming, and parties. Fabulous parties! There was no internet yet and gatherings always organically manifested through word of mouth via networks of friends and like-minded acquaintances, often connected by a love of music. In some strange way, with Mr. Charles Connolly on holiday this week, I feel a bit like I have the โ€œplaceโ€ to myself andโ€ฆ itโ€™s time to party!

Thinking back, these were wonderful times and the music between 1988 and 1992 was both groundbreaking and truly mesmerising all at the same time. There were fresh sounds emanating from global movements like โ€˜Madchesterโ€™ Brit-Pop and the petri dish of the Seattle underground. I took it all in and nothing was off limits when spinning tracks at a gathering. I recall a few parties where I got to play singles or albums that had just been released, and I got to experience the collective sense of euphoria when everyone present knew they were grooving to something that would make history (or at least that is how it felt at times); Fools Gold by the Stone Roses, Hallelujah by the Mondays, and the list goes on. I was a frequent flyer at โ€œOdyssey Importsโ€, Vancouver, B.C.โ€™s main supplier of new British, German and International underground records. The Friday releases usually resulted in a few new purchases weekly, as well as a few skipped classes to get there first thing in the morning. Over that four year span, Acid House, Brit Pop, Shoegaze and Grunge completely dominated my walkman and my turntable. I truly love all of it and my nostalgic passion for these genres has never wavered. Although much of the music and bands from this era have endured, albeit some definitely more than others, I have never stopped loving bands like Ride, Catherine Wheel, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Curve, and many more. Hello, my name is Brad, and I am a SHOEGAZER.

Fast-forward to last month when I was cranking some tunes in the car off of a playlist and literally had to pull over to look at my phone and see what was playingโ€ฆ it was familiar and new all at the same time, but I couldnโ€™t put my finger on who it was. I had seen the band name, Belcarra within the NAS community before, but hadnโ€™t really listened. I paused, put the song back to the beginning, and sat there just listening; completely focused on every note and subtle texture within the track. It was all of the feels I knew so well from my 90โ€™s shoegaze / dreamgaze heroes and more. It was ZEN.

The track opens with an ethereal tension that leads to an explosion of cavernous, shimmering guitar bliss. The rhythm section is spot on and carries a moving, melodic backbone, allowing the vocal melody to shine. The cosmic harmonics float within a spacious backdrop reminiscent of so many of the early shoegaze pioneers like Slowdive and Ride. This track has everything. It is so sonically great, it gets better with every listen. Once you are into the track, the band warps into almost growling death-metal harmonies reminiscent of Mikael ร…kerfeldt; SUBLIME and utterly COOL! The crescendo of the track is a swarm of guitars that fades and then the drums and vocals bring you back and land you like an interstellar craft from another world. I love the escape of this song and the incredibly modern, yet nostalgic universe Belcarra has created. This five-piece from the U.K. is destined for something massive. I can feel itโ€ฆ itโ€™s like that moment when โ€œweโ€ all knew the track we were spinning at the house party was going to be something special. It blew my mind and I hope it does the same for you. My name is Brad and Iโ€™m a Shoegazerโ€ฆ and a Belcarra FAN!

Oh, and thanks to Mr. Connolly for letting me โ€˜house-sitโ€™ while he is off on vacationโ€ฆ Charles, I did my best to clean up the flat to your impeccable standards.

On my first day with NAS, back when I was skeptical about the whole thing, Zen came on and blew my mind with it’s brutally beautiful (or “brutiful” if you will) reverbed guitars and melodic singing over the screaming. My rapid conversion into this community might be wholly attributed to this song. Great song, and great job filling Charles’ role this week, Brad the shoegazer!

This review is a little shorter than we are used to from Charles, but of course he was granted his well-deserved vacation. this review is no less entertaining and made my break a little nicer (some people think I’m just saying that because I’m really waiting for CC’s review during my break, but that’s actually the case). And in any case, you’ve also managed to make people want to hear the song right away. Well done! Now you’d better check if everything is in place in Charles’ house after the wild party. So you can certainly continue to represent him worthy.

My name’s Dom and I’m also a shoegazer. Until reading your post I had thought I was in remission, but I’ve just been clawed back into the upside down of the late 80’s. Cherry Coloured Funk, Just Like Honey, Sometimes….. quick grab my hand!! No it’s too late; I’m back there flicking through my old vinyl collection… Do I play the the regular release, or the 12 inch limited addition. Or do I put the Japanese import on and listen for little nuances in the 32 track mix!! The upside down isn’t so bad. I think I’ll stay here for a while and Zen out. Cheers Brad!! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

This sounded like us about 10 years before you. I think a great review makes you want to listen to the song of the artist getting reviewed and I really want to hear Belcarra’s Music after reading it. Thanks, Brad you did a great job.

Weโ€˜re of the same vintage, Brad, so this really resonated with me on every level! I can still remember the first time I ever heard the Nevermind album. It was on a long road trip and a friend of a friend played it front to back. It was absolutely one of those, โ€œHoly $h1t! What IS THIS???โ€œ musical moments. Fabulous job taking me back to that car ride and giving a deserve group its moment under the (New Artist) Spotlight!

Love that you had to pull over to see who was playing. I can attest to that!

As a listener with an ear primarily geared toward other genres, checking this track out was a pleasant surprise! I agree with Mercury Teardrop, the swarm of guitars is captivating! Keep it up, Belcarra! And nice review, Mercury Teardrop!

I remember that time, when apartments free from parents on weekends we called space๐Ÿ˜, before Friday everyone waiting for the news of who would have the space on the weekend๐Ÿ˜Ž

Good to add some context to the man behind Mercury Teardrop though much pressure with some big boots to fill. Great review as an indie lover, this took me back to when I first heard The Jesus & Mary Chain – Upside Down at a friend’s house. Life was never the same again. Even better, I was able to find a time to play to my own kids and the open-mouthed reaction was just the same.

I’ve always been overwhelmed by the myriad of music genres out there, so much that at times I even struggle to label my own music…. but I really enjoyed this track! So, I guess, I’m a bit of a “Shoegazer” too….. ๐Ÿ‘ž๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ˜…
