NAS 10 Questions with Gabriel Scar

The NAS 10 Questions

This time, we get to know Gabriel Scar, AKA Gunther Huyghe (lead singer and lyrics writer), Glenn Verschueren (rhythm guitar), Yenzy Van den Bergen (lead guitar), Niels Verbraeken (drums) and Luk van den Berg (bass guitar) a rock band from Belgium.

The track “Call On Me” is featured in the New Artist Spotlight Family of Playlists.

1. Tell us a little about where you are from and what you are currently doing.

We are from Belgium (a small country in Europe) and we are a rock band. We are writing songs for our upcoming album. Some of the songs are coming out as singles also. “Call On Me” is one of them. At the moment we are performing in Belgium, but we hope one day we will be able to also perform in other countries.

2. What inspired you to start playing and making music?

For all 5 band members those are different stories. But I think our musical heroes (different for each of us) inspired us to start creating songs. The lead singer Gunther tells us that for him it was when he had a terrible accident in a cycling race, and he wasn’t able to compete anymore. People started telling him he could sing. He didn’t believe it at first, and participated in Idols (in Belgium) to prove them wrong. But the jury said that he needed to go to a singing teacher, but that he certainly could sing. So, he followed their advise.

Niels (the drummer) says he got into music because his nephew was a DJ and music was always a part of his life. And then strangely enough the game guitar hero got him into drumming in real life.

Bass player Luk says he had a musical family. That he did music school. And that he discovered rock in elementary school. He made a band with some friends and after that he was launched into music.

Rhythm guitarist Glenn says that it just happened for him. πŸ™‚

Lead guitarist Yenzy kept things mysterious. πŸ˜‰

𝟯. Who are your biggest influences?

The influences are very different, but we implement all of those influences into our new songs. Our drummer Niels has more like a stoner influence, the bass guitar player Luk is a punk fan, the rhythm guitarist Glenn loves industrial rock and metal and our lead guitarist Yenzy and me (singer Gunther/Gabe) are fans of the rock and metal of the 70s and 80s.

4. What are your goals in the music industry?

We hope to go as far as possible. It’s a very difficult journey. We hope to perform as much as possible, hopefully also getting played (one day) on the bigger radio stations, so that we can touch the hearts of as many people as possible with our music.

5. Tell us about your creative process when you make new music.

We usually write our songs in the rehearsal room. Someone has an idea, a riff, lyrics, a singing line, sometimes even a full song musicwise. And the rest of the band starts searching what they can do on it. And then ideas start going around and a song appears. Usually Yenzy and Niels are the driving forces of the creative process, but every band member has their say.

6. What is your all-time favorite song?

Of our own songs, at the moment, that would be “Remember”, but that song is being recorded as we answer these questions. It’s about the loved ones we’ve lost in the past years. If you are asking about famous artists and bands, you would get 5 different answers.

7. What is the best advice you have either given or received in terms of music?

That is a difficult question. Because we’ve gotten a lot of advice already. An Irish band, that we befriended, recently, called Forge Hounds, did give us a lot of good marketing advice recently. And that did help us a lot already.

8. Proudest accomplishment?

The creation of our songs itself of course. The love of music. But of course, we also hope to one day get into really big venue events, that would also be something beautiful to see happening in front of you.

9. Just for fun! What’s been your most embarrassing moment so far?

(singer Gunther / Gabe answering) Well, this was before we formed a unit with these band members. I only just started singing, and I performed mostly solo, singing covers, then. In one of my very first performances, I got so nervous, that I forgot the lyrics of one song. The public started singing the lyrics, to help me, and at the end, as support (as they knew it was one of my first performances) I got a standing ovation. I still felt ashamed, but at the same time it was a beautiful moment of people supporting each other.

𝟭0. Tell us about your lowest and highest points in music so far.

There were a few high points. Like performing on certain festivals, some with a lot of public, some less, but seeing the people letting loose on your music, that is such a fantastic moment. Also getting some number 1 spots, all over the world, in the charts of certain local radio stations, is a nice feeling too. Lowest point must have been the death of the previous drummer, Johan, in 2018, and the entire band falling apart after that, and then while trying to form the band again with new members, everything getting interrupted by Corona, etc etc. So, we ar very happy now, that the band has been complete for 2 years now, and that we are writing and performing again. Hopefully you can all give our songs a listen.
