Why I Love This NAS Song: “Part Of Me Still Beats” by Blister Soul

Blister Soul’s Artist Page is HERE

Friends, every now and then, a song comes along that feels like it understands the quiet pull we all feel to step back and take stock. I discovered Blister Soul’s “Part Of Me Still Beats” on a New Artist Spotlight playlist. Those NAS finds are abundant for anyone seeking fresh indie voices, and this one hooked me from the first listen. This four-piece out of Missouri, with songwriter Greg Ballew leading on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jason Otero on lead guitar, Bryan Bridgford on bass, and Tony Otero on drums, brings straightforward acoustic rock with unconstrained authenticity.

The sound opens warm and welcoming: bright acoustic guitar strumming simple, solid progressions, a second guitar weaving in a clean picking pattern, and bass and drums laying down a steady foundation that supports without crowding the song. It has that easy ’90s mood, think Tom Petty’s heartland straightforwardness blended with Counting Crows’ emotive vocal style, though the arrangement stays leaner and more direct, allowing Greg’s distinctive, vulnerable vocal delivery to shine through.

The lyrics speak directly to something most of us encounter from time to time: the world spinning out of control, the urge to look in the mirror and sort out your place, and the weight of time and choices settling in. It is introspective and honest, but never overwrought. The chorus delivers the payoff perfectly when Greg sings, “Those that depart leave a trace for those of us that still remain.” The melody lifts just enough to make it stick, turning reflection into something quietly hopeful. That line captures the lingering presence of people and moments, a reminder that we are shaped by what stays behind, and by who.

I might play this song on a long drive through the backroads, maybe with a friend, maybe on my own, humming the chorus as the drums kick into a gentle double time and the miles roll by. It makes the moment feel a little more centered.

If relatable lyrics that touch on the human struggle, a catchy chorus melody that settles in deep, and classic indie/heartland rock warmth are what draw you in, then “Part Of Me Still Beats” is right up your alley. It is honest music that keeps a steady beat, ready whenever you need a moment to breathe and keep going.

Kevin you absolutely nailed it again! Your Counting Crows meets Tom Petty was absolutely spot on. I could definitely jam this on a road trip with a homie. Hopeful is the best way to describe the vibe too. Love your reviews, and I absolutely adore this song!

Awesome review!! You could tell the writer actually listened to the song and understood the vibe instead of just throwing random compliments together. They explained the feeling and message of the track in a way that makes people want to go hear it for themselves.

Completely agree! For me, a great song is always the perfect mix of strong lyrics and solid songwriting, and this one nails both. That chorus line about those who depart leaving a trace really hits.

for now, I don’t know the song, but going to listen soon when I am back on the road thanks to your review. Because you “draw” an image of the band and the song that I MUST listen to. Tom Petty/ Counting Crows, vulnerable vocals, lyrics about human struggle…
    thank you for this review!

“It has that easy ’90s mood, think Tom Petty’s heartland” I think really nailed it. First, great review, I appreciated the guide through the music. And to Blister Soul my wife and I both listened to your song and absolutely loved it. My favorite part is the oohing around 4 minutes in. Awesome song!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about another NAS artist’s song. I get the Tom Petty reference and could quite easily imagining myself laying back on a grassy knoll in the sunshine watching the clouds go by.

Beautifully written review. “Part Of Me Still Beats” really does have that honest, lived-in warmth to it. The line about those who depart leaving a trace hits especially hard, and I like how the song turns reflection into something quietly hopeful instead of overly heavy.

Really thoughtful review. I liked how it connects the song’s title to the bigger idea of heroes, celebrity, and the separation between art and artist. The breakdown of Bryan Cooper’s guitar playing and layered vocals also made the song sound worth checking out beyond just the concept. Great song and great review as always.

I love how you broke down every part of this track—from that warm, familiar ’90s-inspired sound to those lyrics that really make you pause and think. That line “Those that depart leave a trace for those of us that still remain” is so powerful, and you explained its meaning perfectly. Thanks so much for sharing this gem and such a thoughtful review!

Why I Love This NAS Song: part of me still beats by blister soul
From the very first few seconds, the song Part of me still beats completely grabs your attention. What stands out immediately is the incredible attention to detail in the mix—the balance between the instruments, and the vocals creates an immersive atmosphere that you don’t always hear in independent releases.
Lyrically, Blister soul delivers something genuinely relatable here. The songwriting feels honest and deliberate, especially during the chorus/bridge, which has been stuck in my head all day. It’s a masterclass in building tension and delivering a massive payoff. If you haven’t added this to your playlist yet, you are seriously missing out

Nice review of a poignant track by Blister Soul. Yes, the references to Tom Petty are spot on. Nice to hear an old-fashioned actual song (meant as a compliment😊), instead of something trendy with no heart. Blister Soul are very good at this style and their whole catalogue is full of similar heartfelt songs. Well worth checking out all their tracks as there are many gems to be enjoyed. I personally love their track, Anniversary, so check that out while you are on their page. ❤️

The most interesting thing about reading an artist’s review of another’s work is undoubtedly that, in addition to discerning the technical perspective that catches their attention, they describe the emotions that listening to that song evokes in them. This sparks a great interest in knowing if I might perceive what they describe in a similar way. Good review.

This review reads more personal than the past few I’ve read, how you researched the band and added those details along with how you would find yourself enjoying this song on a drive. I liked the different approach.
