Why I Love This NAS Song: “Incredible to me now” by MIK’s Reaction

MIK’s Reaction Artist Page is HERE

I have been a dedicated fan of MIK’s Reaction for quite some time. Whether I am hitting the pavement for a morning run or unwinding after a long day, I frequently find myself appreciating, saving, and liking his work. However, for me, among a catalog of impressive releases, “Incredible to Me Now” stands out as his most profound achievement.

From the very first bar, the track establishes a palpable, dysphoric mood. It does not scream for attention; instead, it seeps into the listener’s consciousness. The song opens with a delicate acoustic strum, shadowed by distant atmospheric echoes that roll in like a gentle morning fog over a silent valley. It is an exercise in restraint.

Soon, the bass line carefully anchors the guitar work, followed by an ascending drumbeat that provides momentum without ever sacrificing the song’s intimacy. The production ensures the instruments never overtake the lyrics, which are characterized by a quiet, heartbreaking sadness rather than outward blame.

The lyrical heart of the track lies in the repetition of the phrase “I don’t know why.” It is delivered with the weight of a perseverating, intrusive thought, the kind that circles the mind in the middle of the night and refuses to resolve. It serves as a haunting refrain of perceived failure and the hollow, quiet devastation that follows in its wake. There is no catharsis here, only the honest admission of being lost within one’s own history.

Jake Sommer runs it back! I really like how you described the song’s restraint and the way the repeated “I don’t know why” feels less like a traditional hook and more like a thought the narrator cannot escape.

Indeed, who wouldn’t love such powerful vocalist?! I love the simplicity of the production of some of the songs on the tape, it speaks volumes. Beautiful tape you’ve got there Mr. MIK… Let’s rock n roll baby! 🙂

Great analysis. I especially liked your point about the repeated “I don’t know why” feeling like an intrusive thought that keeps circling back. The way you described the production supporting the lyrics without overpowering them was spot on as well in my opinion. Great analysis overall.

Jake has such a great ear. And the way he listens to lyrics and interprets them is unparalleled. And he does this from a genuine love of music. That shines through in every review.

As the reviews here mention, this song is perfect for listening to at the end of the day. I’m listening to it right now at that very moment, so I can really relate. I’d also like to add that I really love the singer’s rich, deep voice.

More and more i’m seeing Jake’s reviews and being impressed with his knowledge and understanding, from the mundane to the obscure. And here I still think digital watches are pretty neat.

That’s a fascinating review! Not that they sound alike, but thematically it reminds me of John Frisciante’s song “Regret.”

Great choice from Jake Sommer. “Incredible To Me Now” is a definite standout for me as well within the abundant MIK’s Reaction catalogue. There is a melancholy and a heart wrenching element that fills the song. The lyrics are really poignant and hit hard. The acoustic version on the MIK’s Reaction YouTube page is stunning as well.
    A great song showcased here!
Thank you Jake & thank you MIK’s Reaction.

Jake Sommer is a great story teller you can see it in all the reviews he does. He writes it down so you can see the scenario in your head really well put together.

Right on with this one, Jake! Mik’s music is simple and complex at the same time. The message he gets across in this one is spot on. The repetition that he weaves into it is like a worm that you cannot ignore.

An excellent review that demonstrates a perfect understanding of the lyrics and the arrangement. Or rather, the intuition and foresight that in the indie world become brilliance, or sparkle.

Thanks for taking the time to write this review. You articulate your analysis so well, particularly about the repeated phrase “I don’t know why”. Mik’s voice and the track itself is deep and rich and I really like the appearance of the flute in there too…

Again appreciate all the kind words but especially that people have connected with MIK’s Reaction’s amazing song “Incredible To Me Now.” If you are new to him you might also try his songs: Inspiration, Find Me, Four Days, and This is a New Phase, all just great 🙂

This weeks NAS Song #review is a treat from the universe as its a great song w/ a dysphoric mood by @MIKsReaction – a true talent – and very prolific songwriter too – so a man after my own heart!

This review is penned by 1 of the best musical scribes around – its like Im reading the NME or Pitchfork as the writing is on point and describes so well the musical and emotional aspects of the songs. Hopefully we’ll read more of @JakeSommermusic writings @NAS_Spotlight on a reg basis. #Exceptional

This is a very poetic way to review this song (besides the fact that the song is very good). At the beginning and end, it speaks of the emotion you might feel while listening to the song, and then gives us an overview of the instrumentation that accompanies it. Just reading the review makes you want to listen to it. Very good work.

I also frequent Mik’s work. A well written review. Quite a few MPB songs have a similar theme; no catharsis, just an honest admission of being lost in one’s history.
