Charles makes a good thing differentโ€ฆ

You know when youโ€™ve spent just ages on something because you really want to be proud of the finished result? Ainโ€™t it so satisfying when it all goes to plan? Seeing as most of us are artists, letโ€™s talk about this in terms of art. Makes sense. Imagine youโ€™re a painter, and youโ€™ve started with the lightest sketch after having โ€œwhitewashedโ€ the canvas. The perspective is just right, the intention is just as you had envisioned; you know this is going to work. And so, the first stroke of oil licks the canvas. The brush starts to guide your hand into the right areas, impressing and releasing pressure as it goes. Sometimes delicately, sometimes almost stabbing. Sometimes slow and languid, sometimes ferocious like the quick whip of a sabre. The layers build over several weeks until eventually you step back and see the painting not as a series daubs, but as one whole piece; a scene; a work of art.

The exhausted satisfaction runs over and through you like an ongoing windless, flickering sizzle; a fireworkโ€™s continuous cascading last gasp. The feeling endures without regret or hesitation. You have succeeded. Up to now, it could be your finest. But as the years go by, you continue to sit with it. The โ€œnowโ€ becomes a โ€œthenโ€. Since that moment of inspiration you have had many more. And since those weeks of expression your personality has changed. You think differently now. You work differently now. You wonder if that piece was the best it could have been. You have learnt so much over the years. You have improved in some ways, and changed in others. You have also become very critical of your own past work. You have even toyed with the phase of โ€œnothing is good enoughโ€. And so, with frustration and determination, you start again. Realising the merit in the original, you donโ€™t begin with a violent whitewash; a destruction of the past; a deleting of history – thank the lord. Instead, you set it to one side, its pane reversed. You donโ€™t want to be impressed upon, encouraged to copy what you believe to be less than perfect.

You start with a goal of current-minded perfection, knowing full well that perfection is impossible. Staring at the palette of similar hues, you wonder if these were quite right in the first place. A little more blue here, a little more red there, even a touch of yellowโ€ฆ Yellow! You would never have added yellow all those years ago. And yet yellow seemed so natural now. Huh! Itโ€™s funny how time can change oneโ€™s persuasions. The conviction is strong; passion riding high. Why is it that this time everything is so much swifterโ€ฆ? Are you more focussed? Do you care more? Was it always just a niggling irritation that needed eventual fixing so that finally you could move on to something new? Whichever reason, it is of no matter. The piece is coming together before your very eyes, and before long, it is done. You step back to admire, and admire is exactly what you do. A relief comes over you like that final debt repayment. You are free. THIS is what you meant. THIS is itโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ You flip over the original and place them side-by-side. Hmmmโ€ฆโ€ฆ Now you start to wonderโ€ฆ It turns out that the initial painting was indeed the very best it could have been. Much like the new version. Neither is better than the other. They are simply different.

And on that note, it is time to whisper with Dorian. Thatโ€™s right folks, Dorian Whisper is in the house with his latest release, โ€˜Take To The Skiesโ€™. But wait, some of you might have thought that familiarโ€ฆ And to that, I say โ€œmy, look at YOU with the memoryโ€!! โ€˜Take To The Skiesโ€™ was indeed a song of Dorianโ€™s from quite long ago (2020, as it happens), but this is a brand new version. The 2026 Version, to be precise. But I donโ€™t mean a quick re-jig of the faders or the sprucing up of a tired dry vocal. And neither do I mean one of those doomp-tick doomp-tick remixes. This is a full re-recording; a reenactment from a different angle, with a different view. Dorian (not his birth name, but we all know him as Dorian, so letโ€™s stick with that) certainly has a signature sound in recent years. One with echoes of the 70s, 80s and 90s. The crispness of the 80s and 90s, with the smooth warmth of Steely Dan. However, he didnโ€™t always have this sound. He used to be more a soft lamenting crooner (velvet bow tie and a twinkle in his eye) in a bossanova jazz bar than the happy-go-lucky marine biologist we have come to know and love. Yes, when doffing the musical cape, he is genuinely a globe-trotting marine biologist (Egyptian by origin).

I think on the whole, many music artists do tend to shudder or cringe when they hear their earlier stuff. They shouldnโ€™t. Very often it is not bad, but simply different. And sometimes, it is actually better than their current output, but the artist rarely sees it this way. Dorianโ€™s earlier music fortunately falls into the category of simply being different. Not better or worse. However he thought of his mature song โ€˜Take To The Skiesโ€™, he evidently felt it necessary to bring it up to date with his more recent releases. And considering the original remains available for all to hear, I think this quite a wise move. Why ever not! Itโ€™s also nice because this song was part of his very first release; an EP called โ€˜As Long as You Wantโ€™ – cheeky. And frankly, I bet most of you have never heard it, because listeners almost never delve far back enough. I think thereโ€™s this peculiar assumption/notion that if something is old, it is probably not very good; where newness trumps goodness. Even for this reason alone I think itโ€™s great that Dorian decided to revamp his song. But the main reason Iโ€™m pleased he did is because itโ€™s just fascinating to listen to the two entirely different versions, side-by-side. I could never say I preferred one over the other; theyโ€™re simply different.

The original is more dry, more intimate, somehow more Spanish, with a lethargic heat. It is sadder and more private. But is also more cheeky in a subtle way. The piano and jazz guitar stand together in unity, sharing limelight equally. The whole piece is cosy and quite personal, with restraint and modesty. This brand new version, however, is something else. Firstly, the key has been shifted up a whole step, for a brighter shine. From the very first guitar strum, this has money. There is an expensive sheen of confidence and reassurance. What was previously a classical guitar motif has been usurped by a wide, ringing duo of distorted electric guitars. It feels almost like the LIVE version for a band that has played this song a million times and wants to finally try something new. Which I suppose in a way, it is. The drums have reverb. The rimshot strikes with a vibrant shimmer. Everything has very much more presence and gusto. Those guitars are more akin to Zappa than to Gilberto. And then, thereโ€™s that voice. The most changed of everything, to me. The longing sounds more determined. Itโ€™s like the difference between โ€œsomething has gone wrong, how sadโ€ and โ€œsomething has gone wrong, letโ€™s make it rightโ€. Dorianโ€™s vocal is altogether much brighter, happier and positive. The pre-chorus is also one of the most changed parts. The original slinks into a soft bossa style (think Girl from Ipanema) while the new version rides and builds into a half-time funky groove complete with OWgan and choppy guitar strikes; the snare wallops the water with an almighty splash! The mix in general is technically far superior to the original, but that is not to say the original sounds worse. Itโ€™s an interesting thing, sound. What one listener might call muffled, another might call warm. What one listener might call harsh, another might call effervescent. Like those paintings, neither is better or worse, theyโ€™re simply different.

Let me know in the comments which version you prefer and why. And if youโ€™re (for some reason) uncomfortable about picking one over the other, just say what you like about each version. Links to both are below.

After many tireless weeks, Iโ€™ve stepped back to admire my own masterpiece. Turns out itโ€™s just a series of daubs. Ah well, Iโ€™ll call it modern art.

Charles, your analysis is phenomenal. You captured exactly the feelings, considerations, and reasons that led me to decide to record Take To The Skies again. Obviously, you’re an artist yourself.

I regularly play this song live, and over the years it has naturally evolved. Sometimes new elements would spontaneously appear, or completely new ideas would emerge while I was practicing. I kept track of those ideas, and during the summer I decided that the time was right to reimagine the piece.

And yes, I completely agree that the two versions shouldnโ€™t really be compared, but rather accepted as two different interpretations, each rooted in the period in which it was created and released.

I also love your comparison between artistic decision-making in composing and painting. It feels particularly fitting because the songโ€™s story actually found its way onto canvas in 2020, in a painting by Lucille โ€œJoyโ€ Mijares, which I chose to use as the cover artwork for the current album.

Thank you for putting so much effort into researching your subjects before writing your reviewsโ€”and especially for the care and thought you put into this particular review. It truly means a lot to me.

Eclectic Musical Review โœจ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽตโฉ I do not ever question my musical integrity, in terms of improvement. There’s always a buzzing feeling when I’m producing that tells me that my project is going to be good. In other elements in life I do see a need for improvement. Slowly but surely is the motive. Amazing song review ๐ŸŽถ a remake is what we needed in this week’s installment, and I must say I do like the second version of the song, because the intro blows me away ๐ŸŽตโœจโฉ๐ŸŽถโ–ถ๏ธ

Dorian – I love your music and the latest version of the song at the moment is my current favourite ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ

Looking critically at oneโ€™s past work is one of the painful parts of being an artist. You always evolve and feel you could have done better. Itโ€™s part of the process, I guess

Both versions are really wonderful in their own right, but the new version feels more inviting to me as a listener. It welcomes my ears, whereas the original does feel more personal and is a slightly more voyeuristic experience for the listener. Both are great but the new version feels more celebratory.
    It’s a grand song period!
Congratulations Dorian Whisper. And an exceptional review Charles.

A really thought-provoking read and a great artist to feature in this manner. I love the evolution of a song and the reinterpretations that emerge when a song is evolved or revisited. I first became alive to this with The Smiths, as different versions of the same song would show up on albums and I became fixated on analyzing every detail of each version. My conclusion is always โ€œbothโ€โ€ฆ they are moments that are captured and the passing of and separation of time brings beauty to both. I love Dorianโ€™s fervour and meticulous attention to detail in the update, but also the honesty and urgency of the original. I love this!

Yeah I think I’d have to go with the new one on production values alone. Though the original one has a kind of sparse charm – I prefer the into on that one.

It’s interesting timing because I’m just going through a similar process to one of my early ones – though the changes will be less radical/rewrite.

Anyway – great job Dorian (not Dorian). And thank you Charles!

I haven’t withheld a release in order to re-record it so I don’t know specifically what this is like. The closest I’ve done is recording a song as an acoustic version. I am putting songs into the system that I’ve written decades ago, sort of comparable.

Charles. Interesting review. I definitely have a song or two I’d like to redo. But comparing these two is hard. I liked the bossanova feel of the first and the whistling was interesting and the more mellow vocal. Yet the second is brighter and I like its arrangement, so as you say, just different. Both are interesting in their own way and it’s also interesting to see how another artists redoes an earlier song. Anyway, thanks for the review…โค๏ธ

Thanks for providing us with another great review Charles. The two tracks are quite different even though they are the same song, and whilst they are both good in different ways my personal preference is the older version, mainly because it sounds more intimate/personal and the production does contribute to that.

Nice review, Charles. It is fascinating to consider how art changes over time; not only because artists evolve, but also because the world around their work changes.

Although some modern musical trends may be disheartening, sound quality has improved enormously. Production values are far higher, and I am often amazed by what contemporary producers achieve. Modern mixes can be dense while still giving each instrument clarity and space, and the low end has advanced by leaps and bounds.

I sometimes remaster favourite tracks from years gone by. The songs remain excellent, but their original mastering can sound lifeless beside modern releases.

As for the lovely Dorian Whispers track, I have always been drawn to Dorianโ€™s jazzier side, so I still prefer the original. However, as many have observed, the two versions are really different tracks in their own right. โค๏ธ

A thoughtful description of what so many of us go through in the creation, and reflection on our own work. It’s a complex relationship with the music we’ve made- not quite love/hate, but it can sometimes feel that way! A fun track to listen to, there’s more of a playfulness with this version I think… maybe as if he’s singing with more of a smile? I do really like those snazzy drum fills!

Being able to remake your own work even after 6years is brilliant work. Most of us believe when a song is done Thats it, and we move on to a new project. But Dorian took a different approach, and decided to express his art in two time zones (2020 – 2026) .

Talk about experimental sounds. I guess some canvases are open to more ideas than others.

Oh my what a treat for my eyes this is, I always say it but I do love the build up to the review. Like how a story teller will fill a book with lore. I can definitely relate to this as I am working on a re release of my own. I am more familiar with this “new” version of Dorians Whisper’s song so my be bias but I can appreciate that they are both amazing pieces. Love this article and love both versions of the song!!!

Now this is a topic I imagine a huge swathe of artists identify with-ever chasing perfection and the difficulty of not being able to let go. This becomes so hard once itโ€™s โ€™released into the wildโ€™ and then out of your hands. For me personally this is when I start to become ever more critical-once itโ€™s too late. But then the โ€˜remasterโ€™ allows to address that. Like George Lucas and โ€˜Star Warsโ€™.
But as you quite rightly point out-new is often just โ€˜differentโ€™ not better and each have their merits.
I donโ€™t think I could pick between the two versions-whilst the newer version has a greater confidence and sheen there is something inviting about the intimacy of the original.

But nevertheless it is still a modern production.

    Nice review.
The vivid depiction of the creative processโ€”and how our relationship with our own past work evolves over timeโ€”really resonates. The realization that a reworked piece isn’t necessarily “better” than the original, but simply a reflection of a different version of the artist, is such a insightful perspective. It framing evolution not as erasing the past, but as expanding on it, sets up the introduction to Dorian Whisper’s new release perfectly.
