The NAS 10 Questions

In this week’s 10 Questions we get to know Odiss, an indie music artist from Germany.

Their song ‘My World‘ is currently featured on the NAS Spotify playlists

You can follow Odiss on Instagram, YouTube, Tik Tok, and Twitter/X

1. Tell us a little about where you are from.

I am from a small City in the south of germany called: “WΓ€schenbeuren” with also American and Greek roots. I currently work on a new project that will become my debut album. In the meantime I am working as a chef and advancing my knowledge with everything that has to do with music.

2. What inspired Odiss to start playing and making music?

I always had a big thing for music. In an early age I was in classes to learn the flute and guitar and I was in our school choir, I used to sing a lot. When I started I was watching a lot of Battle Rap Tournaments and when it was over for the year in 2014, I started participating in it myself. I love the complicity in lyrics and how you can build up a message throughout a whole song or just verse.

3. Who are Odiss’ biggest musical influences?

A big inspiration back then were people like Michael Jackson, Xavier Naidoo, Sido and basically every big 2010s Pop artist. Getting older I started shifting to the American Rap scene with artists like Denzel Curry, Kendrick Lamar, KOTA The Friend and Co. My genre is mainly based in Hip-Hop from Emo-Rap to Trap-Metal, Country/Cloud Rap but also Indie-Pop.

4. What are your goals in the music industry or as an artist?

A goal for me is to get booked for shows and make a living with it… Ok to be honest I just want to be the best. If I am the person that inspires people like even my underground favorite artists inspire me, I made it.

5. Tell us about your creative process.

I can not produce beats so I am picking one based on my mood and when I have an easy beginning I just go think 10 minutes about it and record bar for bar. I also still sit back and write like I used to. That means just playing the beat 100x on loop and writing until I record it on a different day. Mixing and mastering is a whenever I feel like process.

6. What is your all-time favorite song by another artist and why?

I would say Begging from Maneskin is a song I could always listen to that has no special mood to it. Only 1 of a lot.

7. What is the best advice you have either given or received in terms of music?

I think I have heard it from an interview but he said something like “just be you, don’t even stress yourself if it is not the right place and time nor feeling, just focus on something else even if it is another song.”

8. What is your proudest accomplishment?

This year alone from the information I have gained about the business to the songs and improvement I made as an artist. This year I was off work for the first time since 2017 and I think I have used it good because before that I almost let music slide a little too much.

This year alone from the information I have gained about the business to the songs and improvement I made as an artist.

9. What’s been your most embarrassing moment so far?

I think it was the time when we were freestyling from the top of the head at a music open mic event and I was joking bad. Or some of the Battle Rap opponents that had some hard stuff to say about the kid lol.

10. Tell us about your lowest and highest points in music so far.

My lowest moment probably was the time when I started mentally pulling myself away from Battle Rap. I started with it and it took me like 2-3 years to stop dissing (ODiss) people and focusing on having a sense in my music. It ended up being my Emo-Rap I only know I wanted to do something so bad and my ideas just hadn’t been good enough for my vision. So and that’s also my high point. It feels so great to not have to think too much about a rhyme, a line about the hook and I am not in the position anymore where I have to feel like I need to pressure myself. I think I have proven myself as a very diverse artist who could do anything.

Appreciated this great interview, especially the nod about just being yourself in music. Yes I totally agree, if it is not us, why do it? I also agree that building a lyrical message is such a beautiful part of the musical process. Appreciate you and this insight!

It was really nice to learn more about Odiss and how he approaches his music. His comment about mood really makes sense to me. As indie artists, I believe our moods play in important part in our creative process 😎

Nice and I think it’s a good thing to want to be the best-not from an ego point of view but just aspiring to bringing the best of yourself πŸ‘Œ

Odiss. Loved your responses. Also the take away of “Just Be You.” If you think about it, that is the only thing we can be successfully. Good luck in your musical endeavors. β™₯️β™₯️β™₯️
